May's actions
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Biodiversity and Me
I will spend at least 2 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
May Brown 4/26/2024 3:15 PMI suppose I didn't realize how inefficient and harmful handwashing is. I always just assumed handwashing used less water. Relying on my energy-efficient dishwasher will be the way to go from now on,-
Clover Lang 4/26/2024 6:43 PMThis always make me think of how there's a health department required hand washing procedure where they just let the water run while you're scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. I think at some point they are going to have to change that hand washing procedure to consider water preservation.

May Brown 4/18/2024 2:17 PMI joined this challenge because my class/instructor gave me the opportunity to do so. Now, I chose the actions I did because I may have already done them or am happy (and able) to learn about and perform them. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
May Brown 4/15/2024 10:47 PMGenerally speaking, I rarely consume high-carbon foods such as meat (I rarely buy it; however, if it is bought by someone else and already cooked, I will most likely consume it). Nonetheless, I do anticipate replacing the meats I do consume with legumes to ensure I am intaking protein as I have am moving out and have more/full control of my diet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Grow LocalHow did it feel to plant something native in your area to support local wildlife and biodiversity? What did you plant? Please consider adding a photo.
May Brown 4/15/2024 10:41 PMSo, I have yet to actually plant anything, though this topic is something I have been mildly interested in for about two years now. Interestingly, a day after researching the importance of fostering native plants in gardens through this site, I went on a walk (doing the 30 for 30) and noticed a sign at my local park advertising a free native plant giveaway on Friday. I think I might just go! :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and WaterHow did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?
May Brown 4/14/2024 2:48 PMI did some research on the options available to catch microplastics. I have decided on purchasing the Coraball because I own many synthetic fabrics.
