Karly's actions

Wildlife

Protect Pollinators with a Plant or Mini-Habitat

Pollinators need a little help from their friends like us! I will take 2 steps to protect pollinators, such as planting a pollinator-friendly plant, installing a pollinator hotel, or by leaving leaf litter for pollinators to call home.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to Grow Plants Your Way

Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 5 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Go EV

I will choose to drive an all-electric vehicle to reduce the carbon emissions of everyday driving.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Make a Reusable Bag

Make my own reusable bag from materials that I have at home. This allows me to reduce consumerism.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 4 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Empowering the Next Generation

Next Gen Outdoor Learning

Learning about the environment with a young person.

Had a close encounter of a SLIMY kind yesterday evening.... as I was clearing an overgrown patch near our back patio in preparation for planting, a 2-inch leopard slug made its way over the heel of my shoe, under my pant leg, and onto my bare ankle. GAH!! 🥴 I re-homed him/her - away from where they've been obviously feasting. Not my favorite creature feature.

Last year the Easter bunny gave my son some flower seeds to plant and it was a HIT! ...I think this may need to be a tradition. 🌼🌷🐇

We tried out our new freeze dryer this weekend. Success!! This will be a HUGE help in preserving our garden harvest and our honeycrisp apple tree in the fall. 🍎

I found a plant identifying app for my phone and my 5yr old son and I have spent HOURS these past couple of days walking around our house, our yard, and our neighborhood checking out every single plant, weed, tree, & flower! We are learning TONS!! 🌱🌷🌿

Saturday I planted 51(!!!) sunflower seedlings that I grew from seed myself! A handful have already become slug food... but it's still awesome to have so many. 🌻🌻🌻

We 💖 our hummingbirds and the feeders were starting to show it. I searched for a way to spruce them up and came upon this solution: Painting the feeders with a couple of coats of nail polish using a throw-away craft brush. Plus, it was pretty awesome to repurpose all things that I had on hand!
