Emerson Boulder Food Garden
We are getting together to plant our first food garden in the Boulder Campus. Bring your veggies, herbs, or flowers seedlings and come help build this garden with us. There were seeds left over from the Seed Swap Event, which will get planted too. We will have three big planters (10 x 3 x 1ft) filled with nice soil ready to be sowed. Wednesday, April 30th at 2 PM by the Bocci Court outside the West Wing Expansion Let's close the celebrations of Earth Month with golden keys, looking towards fruitful healthy harvests in the near future.

Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Health and Well-Being
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Zachery Borer 4/09/2025 3:24 PMSimply put, the best way to avoid having harmful effects on wildlife is to avoid direct contact with these wild animals. Observe them from a safe distance and respect their natural behavior. It is also a good idea to avoid buying products that are made from exotic or endangered animals! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat industries or sectors do you believe have the greatest potential to benefit from sustainable innovation, and how could they drive meaningful change? How do you think sustainable innovation will influence our future?
Zachery Borer 4/09/2025 9:01 AMFrom the small amount of research I have done, the industry with the most opportunity for sustainable innovation is the food industry. Almost 80% of plastic packaging is used on food products and over 50% of this plastic goes to landfills or into the ocean. Creating plastic that is biodegradable and can be used as food for microorganisms is something that companies like AirCarbon are currently implementing.-

I recently read that the amount of microplastics showing up in our brains has significantly increased, with the average amounting to be about the size of a takeout spoon.
"Their findings suggest microplastic levels in the brain have grown by roughly 50 percent over the last eight years. This increase makes sense in the context of plastic production, which doubles every 10 to 15 years, reports the Washington Post’s Shannon Osaka."

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Zachery Borer 4/07/2025 8:44 AMMany of the foods we eat daily rely on pollinators such as bees, wasps, and moths to pollinate. Many plants in the ecosystem also rely on pollinators for genetic diversity which is essential to maintain ecosystem health long-term. Colorado has declining pollinator population which could greatly affect the diverse ecosystems around the state along with having harmful effects to agriculture.
