Traci's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Traci Bergmann 4/30/2024 8:47 AMI emit the most carbon in my home. I will research ways to reduce my carbon footprint at home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Traci Bergmann 4/30/2024 8:37 AMSpending consistent time outside has helped my overall wellbeing. The cool spring breeze, clear skies, and sunny days have been rejuvenating!-
Anna Butler 4/30/2024 8:38 AMit is amazing how quickly it boosts the mood!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Traci Bergmann 4/30/2024 8:31 AMI have starting looking for products sold in cartons instead of plastic jugs, and also looking for products that offer refills, or just refilling myself. Laundry soap is the worst. I'm currently looking for an eco friendly option.-
Jennifer Daniels 4/30/2024 10:13 PMVisit the Ecosource Refillery in Modesto! She also has a booth most weeks at the Turlock Farmers Market. You bring in your own container and refill at the shop. Hopefully you like the products she has, but it's definitely worth trying out!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Traci Bergmann 4/30/2024 8:28 AMI asked myself several times this month if a purchase was a need or a want, and sometimes I could talk myself into a want becoming a need. If I thought I would use the item, I purchased it, but I definitely see this as an ongoing learning process.-
Jennifer Daniels 4/30/2024 10:14 PMThat's a great mindful practice. :)

Traci Bergmann 4/25/2024 2:55 PMI saw this bird at Village Lake today. Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? If you look closely, it has a long feather that runs down it's back. Kind of like a 'rattail' guys would wear in the 80's!-
ANGIE RAPOSO 4/26/2024 12:47 PMIt's really different than the ones we normally have here. -
