Try At Least One Principle of Leave No Trace

After learning about the Principles of Leave No Trace, I will take at least one action to minimize my impact on the outdoors while enjoying nature. I will post what I tried to the feed to encourage others to do the same!

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Vehicle Idling

Idling cars wastes fuel, contributes to climate change, and pollutes the air in our communities. I will turn off my engine when waiting in my car to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 30 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Explore the Feed and Connect with Others

I will spend 10 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?

I am aiming for 8.5 hours of sleep a night instead of the 7.5-8 hours that I currently get. Usually, I will have pets waking me up in the early hours to be fed and let outside, which makes me lose some sleep time. I think by getting to bed a little bit earlier this will help me feel better rested over time. I also plan on having a bedtime routine and limiting my phone screen usage before bed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How did your experience go in trying an action to Leave No Trace? Did you notice others doing the same, or not? From a perspective of having empathy for others, why might people not adhere to the Leave No Trace principles?

I am going to work on leaving what I find. Mainly not doing rock cairns, and encouraging others not to move nature. I believe sometimes this is done for the photograph or social media post.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did being mindful of vehicle idling change your perspective on fuel consumption and air quality? What other transportation habits can you adopt to reduce your environmental impact?

I am trying to be more aware of running my car when I am just sitting in it, including waiting in the car wash line. I also, am going to only use my remote start when it is EXTREMELY cold.

I just joined the Eco Challenge this year. I have already been on a journey of learning about Natives and planting native in my backyard. I have started small and made some mistakes, but this is my year to go big and I am hoping to replace a majority of my yard with Native wildflowers and grasses. I truly enjoy creating a tiny ecosystem in my backyard and working with nature. In this process I have learned to exist with and enjoy bees, which I previously was petrified of. I've even held and rescued a few Bees (mostly Bumbles).

Evelyn, yes there is SO much info!!! It's okay to make mistakes though. Be careful of what seed mixes you are buying. They are often advertised as native to a region, but are not. American Meadows is one that does this. I started just pulling all the non-native flowers and giving them as bouquets to loved ones. Smothering your current yard is a less expensive way to clear a larger area for planting your natives, but it does take some patience. Cardboard or black plastic work for this, or both. And you can always start small.

Beautiful! We want to do a pollinator lawn at some point. Just a lot of information to take in and work to be done!
