Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 200 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sophie Batt 4/30/2024 10:30 AMEven though it has been super windy most of the time where I live, I'm still finding that it feels nice even to sit near a window with plenty of sunlight or a view of the bird feeder in my backyard. Even if I cannot enjoy the outdoors because Mother Nature has other plans in store, it's nice to not feel trapped, and sitting near a window helps me to focus more on schoolwork and reading! Almost makes me feel like a plant sitting on a windowsill, haha! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Sophie Batt 4/29/2024 11:25 AMI went several places here in Central and North Central Washington in an effort to better explore and come to understand the area I live in. I hiked a few of the Horse Lake and Sage Crest trails, explored some of the area around Winthrop, and went on walks in places a little closer to my neighborhood. In doing so, I found myself not only feeling healthier and more connected to nature, but also felt as though I earned a better understanding of the state that I call home, and all it has to offer. -
Sophie Batt 4/20/2024 5:30 PMI volunteered with the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust for a few hours today for their Sage Fest event, and ended up working on trail maintenance and digging drainage for any runoff or meltwater along the sides of the trails. It was an eye-opening experience, and I found it so enjoyable! It felt good to be able to give back, not only to my community, but to me environment as well!-
Jeanne Poirier 4/20/2024 6:48 PMThank you for helping this great organization - it was perfect weather for this kind of work!!

Sophie Batt 4/15/2024 11:52 AMIt's going well so far! I'm really doing my best to make an effort in enjoying and helping to keep my community healthy. I'm making conscious efforts to reduce how many plastic bottles I use, and I'm spending as much time as I can outdoors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Learn about Native SpeciesWhat did you learn about a native plant or animal species in your region?
Sophie Batt 4/08/2024 5:56 PMI researched a little about the big cats, namely cougars, in my home state, and how people such as hikers, hunters, and those who like to camp can safely avoid confrontation to keep both themselves and the wildlife safe. I also learned that cubs will stay with their mothers for up to two years, to properly learn how to hunt and survive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Sophie Batt 4/08/2024 5:25 PMIt feels freeing to spend time outside. I think it would do everyone some good to spend some time outside every day, aside from walking to one's vehicle or taking out the trash. It feels nice to breathe in the fresh air and hear the birds chirping to one another, and I often find being outside much more relaxing than being cooped up indoors.-
Zhao Daryl 4/08/2024 5:29 PMthanks for the sharing! i feel that also!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Sophie Batt 4/08/2024 3:35 PMPeople use a lot more plastic than they realize. Someone may go through six plastic water bottles a day and hardly bat an eye, but if everyone keeps doing that, it will continue to generate mass amounts of waste. If one person can go through that many bottles a day, how bad will it continue to get if everyone does the same thing?
