Ruby's actions
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Ruby Barrera 4/29/2024 7:00 PMThe hard thing about participating in Zero Waste Day was trying not to produce as much waste. I learned that i typically do produce a lot of waste especially when doing my skin care routine. I use a lot of disposable wipes and sponges and will definitely look into a better alternative.-
Ruby Barrera 4/29/2024 8:35 PMFood waste is also another difficult one too. I meal prep and don’t produce as much food waste but I definitely will check out the eco friendly wipes and washable sponges. Thank you Glenda. -
Glenda Harrison 4/29/2024 7:13 PMZero waste was difficult for me too... for me it was food waste - some things are easier to save for soups - and then there is the food packaging. I think I saw some eco-friendly wipes and washable sponges on the Grove website... grove.co. -
PRATEEK SINGHVI 4/29/2024 7:08 PMManagement of daily houseold grocries waste is the most challenging task that we see in this last 30 days..

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Ruby Barrera 4/11/2024 1:55 PMIt's great working with others to clean up our community. The cleanup crew consisted of me, my neighbor, and our kids. We live by a lake and it's kept fairly clean but we still managed to find some trash. The result was that it was a great way to pass time and also help our community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Ruby Barrera 4/10/2024 2:12 PMI learned that our ocean absorbs 31% of the carbon emissions we produce each year. Over the last 50 years the ocean has taken in 90% of the heat caused by global warming. The high levels of carbon dioxide are affecting the water to become more acidic as well as making it hard for species to form their shells. When sharing this information with my friend the most impactful conversation we had was about how the water quality is also affected by climate change. Having higher water temperatures would mean many more forms of water pollution.
