Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Learn about Native SpeciesWhat did you learn about a native plant or animal species in your region?
Miguel Barba 4/30/2024 6:34 AMEnsure you do your research, even if a plant is native to your area, it might not be well-adapted to a particular place in the garden. Choose plants whose water and soil needs match your yard or area of placement. Native plants bring with them a handful of benefits such as supporting wildlife, nurturing natural helpers and low maintenance in a garden setting!. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Miguel Barba 4/26/2024 2:46 PMConsumption is my highest emission and to reduce this, I will commit to buying more local foods and goods and avoid purchasing new products as needed. I disovered local rebuilding stores that specialize in upcycing or recycling building materials. I can also reduce my housing by limiting the hours used for AC. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Miguel Barba 4/26/2024 2:25 PMIt gave a deeper sense of responsibility, prior to the challenge I would often see little pieces of garbage and think nothing of it. Now, building my knowledge and habit, I find pride in maintaining my community clean. It's a simple task to pick up a piece of trash and discard accordingly-
Glenda Harrison 4/26/2024 2:34 PMWell done! Litter has always bothered me, but sometimes there is so much to pick up. I do try to pick up the odd bit when I can, but I started taking rubber gloves and a bag with me on my walks. I now have one of those tools that helps so I don't have to bend so much. Maybe you will inspire others to pick things up too. (I also pick up things that have fallen from shelves and clothing racks in the store.)

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Miguel Barba 4/22/2024 11:57 AMBeing the end user of the supply chain, it can be difficult to achieve Zero waste for a day. Majority of household products and consumables are pre-packaged for security, safety and preservation reasons. However, you can adjust by selecting products with reusable packaging or recycable packaging. In one instance, we found a local brewery that sells growlers. You can come back and refill your growler with beer instead of buying single use cans. Yard debris such as grass clippings are repurposed for fertilizer or tossed in chicken coop. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Miguel Barba 4/22/2024 11:48 AMEverything will most likely have single use plastic waste, it was interesting and challenging going to the store to purchase products without single use plastic! One shampoo product line sells reusable bottles and you can order large containers with refillable substance. However, it still produces waste regardless
