Arunkumar's actions

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 50 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 120 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

Biodiversity and Me

I will spend at least 30 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 15

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

    Amazing facts about Brazil:
Brazil holds the title of being the most biodiverse country in the world. It also claims the top spot among the world’s 17 megadiverse countries and ranks second only to Indonesia in terms of species endemism. Within its borders lie two pivotal biodiversity hotspots—the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado—along with six terrestrial biomes and three expansive marine ecosystems. The country currently boasts knowledge of at least 103,870 animal species and 43,020 plant species, collectively constituting a staggering 70% of the world’s documented animal and plant species. It is estimated that Brazil is a sanctuary for between 15-20% of the world’s biological diversity, hosting the highest number of endemic species worldwide. Brazil’s biodiversity continues to expand, with an average discovery of 700 new animal species each year.

    How did Bhutan become carbon-negative?
The government of Bhutan has a history of basing political decisions on a Gross National Happiness (GNH) index, before economic growth. More than 70% of the country is covered in trees. This large amount of tree cover has seen Bhutan becoming a carbon sink – meaning that it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it produces. Bhutan absorbs roughly seven million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and only produces around two million tonnes.

It started back in 2009 during the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (UN COP 15) in Copenhagen. Here COP’s member states made a promise to remain carbon neutral for all time. At COP 21 in 2016, Bhutan re-iterated that promise.
Here are some of the ways Bhutan became carbon negative:
    • A ban was placed on log exports.
    • The constitution states that 60% of the country’s total land area remains under forest cover for all time.
    • Free hydroelectric power generated by Bhutan’s many rivers is used instead of less environmentally friendly fossil fuels.
    • Free electricity is provided to rural farmers.
By 2030 Bhutan plans to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions and to produce zero waste.
Other creative environmental initiatives in Bhutan include a partnership with Nissan to provide the country with electrical cars.

Beside giving me a sense of ownership and connection towards the community, volunteering encourages people to safeguard community and builds strong bond within the community. Spent couple of hours cleaning up the canal promenade last weekend and planning to organize a clean up at the community beach this weekend.

    Chernobyl and Biodiversity:

38 years on. Chernobyl has gone from the being considered a potential desert for life to being an area of high interest for biodiversity conservation. Nature is much more resilient and adopting than human. We just need to give the space it deserves.

UAE's SAHIM - inspiring greater public participation in citizen science,
Launched in partnership with Emirates Nature-WWF, Sahim aims to harness the power of community participation and usher in a new era of citizen science in the UAE. Each project is based on rigorous principles of citizen science and contributes to national environmental and sustainability goals.
For example, one can use the app for personal waste audit as well conducting community clean up. The information captured is shared with government and policy makers to run targeted campaign to reduce the source of the waste.

Building bond with Nature & other species:
In the initial days birds were hesitant and scared to eat the food when we see them through the glass.
Nowadays, they feel safe even when we are around standing next to them. So pleasing to watch them play around with their friends and family.

    Al Wathba Wetland Reserve:
Established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is the first area in the Emirate designated for protection by law and was declared a Ramsar site in 2013. Once a coastal salt flat (sabkha), it has now flourished into natural and man-made lakes that enable many of Abu Dhabi's species to thrive. In 2018, the reserve was placed on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas making it the first site in the region to receive this recognition.

The reserve is particularly known for its large population of Greater Flamingos – with as many as 4,000 living there during autumn and spring – but also hosts more than 250 species of birds, 37 plant species and a wide range of aquatic life. There are two self-guided walking trails (1.5 kms or 3 kms) for visitors to explore and a bird-watching hide to observe the flamingos.
