What an enriching experience it has been. Very pleased with my own actions supporting this greater cause of nature conservation and bio-diversity. Thanks for all the inspiration and ideas from my peers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Arunkumar Ayyalusamy's avatar

Phosphates in laundry and dishwasher detergent have a fertilising effect, triggering the widespread growth of algae that saps away the water's oxygen, reducing biodiversity. By reducing water tension, surfactants allow other pollutants in water bodies to be absorbed more easily by plants and animals.

DO YOU WANT TO GO COMPLETELY CARBON NEUTRAL?

If we are to solve the climate crisis we have to reduce our carbon footprint below 2 tons CO2 per person and year, by 2030 at the latest.

In wait for technological development (cheaper electric cars, electric airplanes, etc.) the easiest way to take responsibility of your remaining carbon footprint is to carbon offset.

Neutralizing your whole remaining footprint only costs £9 per month!
So becoming carbon neutral won't cost you more than a pizza each month!

Check out CimateHero to calculate your carbon footprint and reduce it with tangible lifestyle changes or completely offset to become Carbon Neutral. I became one a month ago.

Higher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?

Every human has the right to choose better lifecycle. However not at the cost of environment and bio diversity. Its the balance what we all need to remember and maintain while choosing a specific lifestyle. Effective Waste Management, Say no to Plastic, Invest in nature, Healthier diet, consumption for need(not greed) are some of the practical and fulfilling choices we should make to retain the balance.

    Why is regenerative agriculture needed?

Agriculture today, including the use ofheavy machinery, fertilizers and pesticides to maximize food production, is contributing to soil degradation and loss.

Within 50 years, there may not be enough soil left to feed the world, according to regenerative farming organization Regeneration International.

Intensive farming also churns up CO2 naturally stored in soil and releases it into the atmosphere. This contributes to the global warming that is driving

    What is regenerative agriculture?
Broadly, it encompasses both conservation agriculture and sustainable agroforestry techniques as well. So, these can be practices such as crop diversification, shade tree planting, use of cover crops, reduced tillage and many more. And these techniques really improve crop yields for farmers through increased soil nutrients and organic content, which reduces the need for fertilizers, but they also reduce soil erosion, improve water retention and have biodiversity benefits as well. So all of these reduce costs for farmers as well. These techniques could add around US$ 70 billion per year of gross value to farmers."
