Share My Why

Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey

I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Share My Why

Share My Why

I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Vehicle Idling

Idling cars wastes fuel, contributes to climate change, and pollutes the air in our communities. I will turn off my engine when waiting in my car to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Sustainable Innovation

Explore Alternative Transportation Options

I will explore alternatives to using a car — such as walking, biking, carpooling, micro-mobility options, or public transit to reduce my carbon footprint. I will use alternative transit 1 miles per day.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Declutter and Donate

Decluttering can reduce stress and benefit others. I will declutter my home and donate items I no longer need to support others in my community.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Join a Cleanup Effort

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Explore My Area

Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 3 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs

Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 5 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 1 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials

Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Advocate For Better Food Packaging

When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

This being the last day of the eco-challenge, I'd say it was tough to even check-in on the app everyday which was a change from my normal routine so it's that much harder to not only change routine to help the environment but to maintain that change! Changing things like hanging up my laundry to dry outside which takes more time instead of throwing it in the dryer and pressing a button. I think that finding small joys in tasks like that help, like when I enjoy the smell of laundry dried in the sun or seeing the gentle wave of clothes blowing in the breeze with the backdrop of the bright blue sky. Taking the time to reflect also helps instead of always having to do the next thing. I hope to carry on these new habits and taking time to reflect. Happy Earth Month everyone!

The month has almost flown by! Being able to participate in tree planting events earlier this week and today was inspiring to see so many people out willing to lend a hand. I was able to declutter my closet by giving my friend a shirt that didn't fit me quite right but that for her perfectly. Biking and walking in forests and on trails with the recent good weather has improved my mood and let me run into friends I hadn't seen in a while. While there is so much on earth to appreciate, we can't take it for granted and new to keep pitching in to keep it sustainable!

FYI for those who may be interested:

Electric Vehicle (EV) owners are needed for a grad research survey. "If you are 18+ and own an Electric Vehicle, take part in this 10–15 minute survey to help shape future charging infrastructure," writes graduate student Diana Shakhova. "This project aims to explore electric vehicle (EV) drivers’ charging behaviours and preferences to support the improvement of EV charging infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to understand how factors such as charging cost, battery level, travel distance, and charging time influence EV drivers' charging decisions."

"For questions, contact [email protected]or my supervisor Lisa Aultman-Hall at [email protected].

This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Board.

I realized a new biking route to get to the movie theatre with less traffic. Also the route and location of what I call the "clearing" is known to me but I finally was able to get out to it for the first time this year and it didn't disappoint! I hope everyone has a chance to get out there and discover somewhere new and enjoy what nature has to offer!!!

What did you learn when exploring alternatives to using a car? If you were able to try an alternative, what did you try? How did using alternative transportation impact your daily routine and your perspective on reducing emissions?

Biking to get groceries is almost like a mini self-challenge. Even prepared with panier bags, it's so easy to buy more than can fit, then you have to get creative. It's part 3D jigsaw puzzling and part acceptance that if your bags are overloaded and one falls off while riding so that the 2 apple pies that your partner insisted on buying goes down with it, well it's just part of the deal. At least there is no need to slice or chew very much....

I try to avoid packaging as much as possible but can always do better. I chose certain products based on packaging, like oatmeal in paper container versus plastic or even better yet, bringing my own containers to the bulk barn to eliminate any packaging.

Being mindful about taking a short shower made me be mindful when washing dishes too. It's amazing how little water you actually need, it's almost like a competition with myself.
