What is resilience?
Share a Resilience Story
Stories connect and inspire us. I will share 1 resilience stories—either from my life, my community, or from a leader or culture I admire—through conversations, social media, or the event feed to help others see resilience in action.
What is resilience?
Share a Definition of Resilience
Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 1 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.
Personal
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.
Water
Single Family Home Water Audit
Book your free in-home water audit to test the flow rates of your faucets and showers, check for leaks, and recommend water-saving options.
Community
Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track
Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues
Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Plant Trees With Your Community This Earth Day
Come join your community for a tree-planting event! Join the City of Guelph, the Rotary Club of Guelph and Trees for Guelph for a special Earth Day tree planting event. Link to register can be found in the "learn more" tab
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Soil and Food
Use Guelph Waste App to determine what belongs in each waste stream
I will use the Guelph Waste App to help sort my waste into the correct stream and make sure items like batteries, pharmaceuticals and electronic waste are disposed of properly.
Water
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Action Track
Remember to bring a reusable cup or water bottle when you're out.
I will bring a reusable drink cup with me for my beverage orders or water refill stations to reduce the amount of single-use item waste I create.
Water
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

Annie Au 4/26/2026 7:43 PMTree planting days are always such a worthwhile event to attend. It's great to see the community for together to add some much needed green to the city. Each year it gets better and better, this year they posted boards with instructions and they put the pots where they should be planted which was helpful - the buckets of water were still pretty heavy, but a good way to work the arms - along with the shoveling of soil and rocks! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat community activity did you join, and how did it make you feel connected to others? How do projects like this strengthen your community over time?
Annie Au 4/19/2026 1:55 PMThe clean and green event coordinated by the City is really great because it takes place over the entire month of April. This means they my family and friends can find a date that works with us which it makes it a lot easier. I will mention that we cleaned up a lot of plastic ziploc bags, candy wrappers and dog poop bags (that was gross and so unnecessary). -
Annie Au 4/09/2026 9:56 AMDon't forget to visit the City of Guelph Earth Month site - tree giveaways and tree planting coming up! And I can see already that a lot of folks have participated in the Clean and Green Community Clean Up - thanks for keeping our city beautiful! I'm looking forward to doing our neighbourhood soon! -
Annie Au 4/09/2026 9:45 AMThe buds are starting to come out on the trees, spring is in the air! With the warmer weather, it's easier to be active with biking and walking. Now's usually the time to start seeding your lawn with all the wonderful rain - consider planting clover seed! Clover seeds create a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and green lawn that requires no fertilizer and less mowing.-
