Waqas's actions

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

I got a chance to visit new lake in UAE where I have seen that sometime it is a challenge to weigh in comfort vs sustainability! I think travelling is the time, which needs more focus than our routine. It is also an opportunity to talk about nature, conservation and sustainability with fellow travellers.

    What do you think?

I learned that consistency is the key here! Doing one time is also important but consistent focus will help in changing the behaviour permenantly! Lets persist even a small step of persistence

Participating in the EcoChallenge has opened my eyes to the power of observation in creating positive change. Each day, I find myself more attuned to our impact on the environment. This morning, during my commute, I reflected on how I can be more mindful in reducing waste in my car. From opting for reusable water bottles to minimizing single-use plastics, every small step counts towards a greener journey. Excited to share and learn more ways to tread lightly on our planet!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Waqas Ashraf's avatar
    Waqas Ashraf 4/02/2024 3:04 AM
The process was a bit difficult as I was planning to visit my home country during the upcoming Eid holidays but now decided to spend the holidays locally. UAE is a place where many places are not known to many residents and i have decided to explore new places along with my family in Eid holidays.

Daily check-ins are the perfect way of keeping myself engaged. I can see that fun has started to influence behavior in many ways. I started thinking consciously about the many aspects of how we humans are affecting Earth and its beauty! Let's continue learning & playing our part!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil Disposal
Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

    Waqas Ashraf's avatar
    Waqas Ashraf 4/01/2024 6:21 AM
Not draining the oil in the normal home drain itself surprises me. I came to know from our community manager that they have a process of used oil collection where the collection people come and collect every 2 weeks. I have opted for this facility and have decided to let my neighbors and friends do the same.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

    Waqas Ashraf's avatar
    Waqas Ashraf 4/01/2024 6:12 AM
For me personally, use of plastic bags is the highest use of plastic for me. Keeping tote bags in my car will allow me to save all those single use plastic bags
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Waqas Ashraf's avatar
    Waqas Ashraf 4/01/2024 6:11 AM
I think dishwasher usage has become a norm here in UAE but we also need to educate ourself about the settings which we select to ensure minimum usage of water to get the same cleaning outcome.
