Josephine's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 24 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

Yesterday, Emerson Manila in partnership with Waves 4 Water, took action to provide cleaning drinking water to those in need by donating water filters in Tanay, Rizal. Together, we're making a tangible difference in improving access to safe water around the world. #WaterForAll #CommunityImpact

Working with others in the clean up activity in Las Pinas Wetland park made me feel empowered and connected to my peers. Seeing the tangible results of our efforts, such as cleaner park or litter free surroundings, fills me with pride and motivates me to continue contributing to the well-being of my community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Josephine Arevalo's avatar
    Josephine Arevalo 4/26/2024 9:15 PM
I researched advisories on eating fish in my region and found recommendations to limit consumption of certain species due to contaminants like mercury and PCBs. Upon reflection, I realize that my diet choices may not fully align with these guidelines. To ensure compliance, I'll be more vigilant about choosing low-mercury fish and limiting consumption of high-risk species. Additionally, I'll explore plant-based alternatives to further reduce my environmental impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Josephine Arevalo's avatar
    Josephine Arevalo 4/26/2024 9:05 PM
I learned that many ingredients in conventional cleaning products can harm water quality and biodiversity due to chemicals like phosphates and synthetic fragrances. Switching to eco-friendly alternatives can mitigate these impacts. Yes, I tried making my own cleaning products using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. It went well - they were effective, affordable, and eco-friendly!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Josephine Arevalo's avatar
    Josephine Arevalo 4/26/2024 8:39 PM
I learned that my water footprint extends beyond direct consumption to include the water embedded in products I use and the food that I eat. To reduce and be aware of the water I use, I plan to adopt water-saving habits such as fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and being mindful of my diet's water footprint by consuming less water-intensive foods. Additionally, I'll prioritize supporting organizations and practices that promote water conservation and sustainability.

Biodiversity + Wildlife Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Josephine Arevalo's avatar
    Josephine Arevalo 4/26/2024 8:34 PM
Volunteering enhances the community by providing essential services, fostering social cohesion, and addressing local needs. It changes my relationship with the community by deepening my sense of belonging, building connections with fellow volunteers and residents, and empowering me to make a tangible, positive impact in the places where I live and work.
