Community and Connection
Explore the Feed and Connect with Others
I will spend 3 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.
Wildlife
Learn to Be a Responsible Pet Owner
Being a responsible pet owner means minimizing the impact pets have on wildlife by keeping them indoors, never setting them 'free' into nature, and supervising pets when they are outside to prevent them from hunting or disturbing wild animals. This also keeps our pets safe from harm. I will spend 10 minutes learning about ways to ensure my pet’s behavior and care practices protect local wildlife and their ecosystems.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Conduct a Home Energy Audit
Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Sustainable Innovation
Conduct a Plastics Audit
Reducing plastic use starts with awareness, and there are amazing innovations in materials to replace plastic! I will conduct an audit of the plastic products I use daily and identify items I can replace with sustainable alternatives.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Sustainable Innovation
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 30 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?
Cailey Ansley <3 4/15/2025 9:50 AMIt’s eye-opening to realize how much food—and money—we waste without even thinking about it. When I reflect on where I’d rather use that $1,500, I immediately think of experiences that create lasting value—like travel, investing in wellness, or supporting local food initiatives that help others access fresh, healthy meals.Looking at my own habits, I’ve noticed that a lot of the waste comes from overbuying fresh produce with the best intentions, but not always having a plan for how to use it in time. Leftovers also tend to get forgotten in the fridge, which adds up more than I realized. To address this, I’ve started meal planning more intentionally, shopping with a list, and keeping a “use first” section in the fridge so nothing gets lost in the shuffle. It’s not just about saving money—it’s about respecting the resources and people behind our food, and being more mindful of our impact. -

One person who really inspired me on the feed was Angela Mea Clarete—they shared a perspective that genuinely challenged how I think about how take advantage of the summer season. Their post wasn't just insightful; it sparked a whole new way of looking at things for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

This challenge is rather difficult for me in the aspect of unlearning to use plastic bags. I've used them a lot and the process of remembering my reusable bags, whether its the three I keep in my purse or the ones i bought specifically for groceries, it does get a bit challenging to keep the pattern of using my reusable bags in store.-

I had to buy enough to have them everywhere I needed them for it to make an impact. To make it fun I started collecting totes/bags from national parks. I have 3 in my car at all times, my husband does too, and we have about 5 more inside that the kids use for various things. I couldn't get into a rhythm of using them until I had over 10 bags. Now that I have enough, I've eliminated HUNDREDS of single use bags. -

You might try storing them in your car, if you drive to the grocery. they don't weigh much, so don't really impact gas mileage.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat actions can you take to ensure your pets do not harm local wildlife? How does being a responsible pet owner contribute to the well-being of both your pets and the environment?

I try to always make sure that my two animals don't contribute harm the local wildlife around my house, especially since I live in front of a bayou. I also believe as responsible pet owners you have to be aware of the different species native to the area around and how certain household pets can and will damage them, and its also good to note the different wildlife in order to protect your own animals during walks, and other types of outtings.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat surprised you most about the amount or types of plastic you use daily? What sustainable alternatives are you excited to try, and how do you think they’ll reduce your plastic waste?

At home, I often try to avoid using a lot of plastic, I'm a big fan of blind boxes, and it always upsets me at just how much plastic is used in those small boxes, I try to curve purchasing them as to not contribute to more waste and over consumption, but the cute faces make it so hard :]
