Ben 's actions

Health and Well-Being

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Begin a meeting with a “Sustainability Moment”

Kick off your meetings with a "Sustainability Moment" to keep environmental awareness top of mind. Even better, develop new "Sustainability Moments" tailored to your specific location and work, making the connection between sustainability and your daily activities even stronger!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Take the Green Pill Trainings on Emerson Learn

Learn about sustainability by taking two Green Pill modules on Emerson Learn. Choose the topics that appeal to you most!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn How to Save the Bees

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 15 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Enjoy the Environment with Youth

Experiencing nature together builds appreciation and connection. I will spend 60 minutes enjoying an outdoor activity with a young person, such as hiking, visiting a park or nature center, or exploring a trail.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Replace a Product

Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 20 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 25 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn to Grow Plants Your Way

Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 60 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Join a Cleanup Effort

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 2 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

Exchanging plastic bags for a super market bag for life is easy to do. The challenge is forgetting the bags in the car and thinking you can carry the 1 item you went in to the supermarket for with the 10 or 15 items you end up buying.

I have to recognize it was a problem for me too. Leqving in the car, in my backpack, at home. Ehat I did I did not buy, I took a box, something just to learn it. Now goes better but this 1 month educated me quite well.

I'm afraid my ability to remember in advance - has had to be solved by keeping an extra few in family cars - so no excuse to forget. I think it will be one of those unsolved mysteries in a few years where all the life-time bags went to around the house, shed, car, etc etc

I agree but my bags don't always get to the car. Though I find if I hang them on the front door handle after emptying them, I am more likely to remember to grab them to put in the car. But also not having a bag and not using a cart can limit my purchases in those "I only need one thing" trips to the store. If I can't carry them I don't get them.

Visiting Thor's cave on a recent 20k hike in the peak district with my oldest son, was a great way to enjoy time in nature. There are so many distractions for the younger generation and it was great to have several hours with no cell reception to really be immersed in nature. My son even managed to rescue a tiny abandoned lamb from certain death.
