Charlene's actions
Personal
Write in a Resilience Journal
Reflection helps us adapt and grow. I will spend 15 minutes writing in a journal about challenges I face, the strengths I use, and what helps me thrive.
Personal
Meditate
Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 10 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.
Community
Connect with Someone
Strong communities are built on connection and trust. I will reach out to 2 others—friends, colleagues, or neighbors—to check in, have a meaningful conversation, offer support, or to meet someone new near me.
Community
Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness
Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to 1 people or perform 1 random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.
Water
Collection of Rain water
I have several houseplants requiring watering. I used pails to collect rain water since we don't have rain barrels. I was able to collect 8 L of water for watering.
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Community
Support Local Businesses
Supporting local businesses helps keep communities vibrant and resilient. I will choose to shop at 1 local businesses or restaurants, with a focus on businesses owned by people of color, local farmers, or community members.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
What is resilience?
Share a Resilience Story
Stories connect and inspire us. I will share 2 resilience stories—either from my life, my community, or from a leader or culture I admire—through conversations, social media, or the event feed to help others see resilience in action.
Personal
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 4 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Community
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services that contribute to local self-sufficiency, such as teaching a repair skill or helping with a neighbor's garden.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Leave the Leaves
Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.
Water
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports local needs. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Reduce Light Pollution
Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.
Community
Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.
What is resilience?
Share a Definition of Resilience
Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 3 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.
Soil and Food
Learn How to Save Pollinators
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 060 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.
Water
Create My Own Water Action
Everyone’s water needs and use are different. I will create an action that works for my life and supports water resilience—and make my commitment public by sharing it in the feed to inspire others.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Choose Native Plants
Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.

Feeling a little peckish at lunch...thank goodness we have a catering company that also serves lunches in our office building! The woman who owns the business arrived in Canada as an immigrant and 30 years later she is the proud owner of a successful and thriving catering company. I am immensely proud to have contributed to this wonderful woman's Canadian dream! -

I started my day having a short catch up and coffee with an old friend. There is absolutely a noticeable change in my mood by starting my day connecting with someone instead of starting work immediately.-

Today, we started planting jalapenos for our favourite stuffed jalapeno peppers. The seeds were from organic jalapenos that were purchased from our Farmer's Market last year. -

I realized that out of the 93 team members, I have only either met or communicated via e-mail with 13 people. I would like to introduce myself to my fellow team members both in the eco-challenge community as well as the Alliance community.
My name is Charlene and I joined the Alliance team through an acquisition. Greetings from ATG North!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWhat is resilience? What story did you share, and how did it feel to share it? Did telling or hearing resilience stories shift how you think about strength and adaptability?
Charlene Allen 4/13/2026 7:06 PM- Pet Parent 🐾
Today was my daughter's 20th birthday. As I reflect back on the path we walked together through my pregnancy and through our life, I realized what immense strength she and I have been given. We beat all the odds. When my doctors wanted me to abort her to save my life, we chose her life and she proved them wrong. Over and over through my pregnancy, when things got rough, she pulled through. I am immensely proud of how far she has come and on days like today, it makes me realize that I am resilient and strong and will persevere.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about the businesses or owners you supported? How does shopping locally contribute to a more vibrant and resilient community?
Charlene Allen 4/13/2026 6:57 PM- Pet Parent 🐾
What I noticed from going to family owned coffee shop was that there was a lot of chatter, more so than at another coffee shop. The chatter was from regular customers chatting amoungst each other. I also noticed how many servers knew their customers by name. -

I don't have a rain barrel but i did collect rainwater from each of our eavestroughs to water my indoor houseplants.
