Herb's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 20 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Freshwater + Oceans
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 10 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Herb Aliga 4/26/2024 10:25 AMI no longer use plastic bags and find that by either using a reusable bag or not using one at all also helps me being more mindful in what i purchase.-
Catherine Alexander 4/30/2024 7:41 AMFunny thing about this... I stopped using single use straws (I have my own reusable straws) because every time we visited California they gave us paper ones and those break apart in your beverage, and that drove me nuts. Now I'm just used to using my own reusable straws! -
Dina Lomagno 4/27/2024 7:28 PMThis! I definitely cut down on impulse buys when I started using my tote bags for groceries, farmers markets, etc. Great job!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Herb Aliga 4/26/2024 10:23 AMVolunteering makes me more connected to my community and it's a TON of FUN!-
Dina Lomagno 4/26/2024 3:44 PMBeing together, giving back, and celebrating the community are the best ways to our work week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Herb Aliga 4/24/2024 7:51 AMPicking up litter throughout my walks and such show just how fragile our ecosystem is. No matter what neighborhood I'm in or what time of day it is, it's very easy to pick up litter anywhere. I have more respect for my community since I'm actively working to make it cleaner and doing my part to remove any litter.-
Catherine Alexander 4/24/2024 8:07 AMGreat job Herb! Another thing I have noticed, is that when my neighbors see me doing this they have a tendency to join in the clean up efforts as well. If everyone does a little, nobody has to do a lot!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Herb Aliga 4/18/2024 7:44 AMI have found that my worry of forgetting my personal water bottle with me has gone away from regularly maintaining the practice of checking for my water bottle before i leave for work, and when i move from location to location. I also find that having 2-3 backup water bottles have been helpful in ensuring i maintain this practice everyday -
Herb Aliga 4/13/2024 6:10 AMI, along with 80 Starbucks partners were able to pick up 984 lbs of trash from Sunset Park this past Thursday.-
Dina Lomagno 4/26/2024 3:45 PMI still can’t believe we were able to get that much in such a short period of time, way to go team and way to go Herb for setting this up. -
Kelley Frey 4/15/2024 10:43 AMAwesome job to your whole group!

Herb Aliga 4/08/2024 8:20 PMI have been using my personal cup everyday to carry my water and beverages that I consume at Starbucks-
Megha Gola 4/08/2024 8:27 PMThat is great idea to carry your own cup. I will start doing the same.
