Catherine's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 7 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Biodiversity and Me
I will spend at least 15 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Invest in NatureWhat did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?
Catherine Alexander 4/29/2024 9:51 AMMy husband and I have been looking more into solar energy for our home. Not only does it help us with our energy bills but it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change, which is critical to protecting humans, wildlife, and ecosystems.-
Dina Lomagno 4/30/2024 8:56 PMWe did this and couldn’t be happier. Living in NV definitely has the benefit of continuous sunshine, our bill last month was $18. It’s a great investment, also look into tankless water heater, it was a game changer for us. -
Kelley Frey 4/30/2024 9:24 AMI have been wanting to look into this too. I think it will be worth the investment in more ways than just reducing energy bills. I like things that can have multiple benefits.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Catherine Alexander 4/29/2024 9:45 AMWhen I was on vacation, I looked for more eco-friendly and "local" businesses to buy gifts for the family. Not only were they fun to give, but sharing the story behind them made the gift also more meaningful.-
Dina Lomagno 4/30/2024 8:56 PMI love this and will be using this on my next vacation!

Catherine Alexander 4/28/2024 7:52 AMSet up calendar reminders for changing out our house filters. By doing this it will allow our HVAC to not work as hard as it needs to and will help keep our home air clean! -
Catherine Alexander 4/25/2024 7:15 AMHad a great time volunteering at Three Squares in support of the Feeding America Program for GMOG! Partnered with LS/CO partners at the event. We managed to put together over 6,700 lunches for kids in the community! Not only a wonderful way to support the community, but a great time with fellow partners!-
Dina Lomagno 4/30/2024 8:57 PMThis was so much fun but also amazingly impactful to our community. Proud to be a partner! 💚 -
Ariel Manalo 4/25/2024 7:22 AMWow! This is such a great initiative.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Catherine Alexander 4/25/2024 7:14 AMIt's always nice to purchase items that are eco-friendly. But before I buy a new eco-friendly item, I will continue to look for natural wood items that need a second life! Making more cognizant purchases like this feels good and is the right thing to do! -
Catherine Alexander 4/24/2024 8:06 AMAs part of GMOG I will be volunteering with my peers at Three Squares as part of the Feeding America support programs! This is not the first time we have volunteered at this amazing organization! Not only does my time help the organization, but I am also able to bond more with my peers and meet new partners! -
Catherine Alexander 4/23/2024 6:42 PMI must say...doing these daily check-ins really keep me cognizant of what I do (or do not do) in regards to being eco-friendly!-
Shelley Pinckney 4/23/2024 8:51 PMWell said. We'll have to keep it going after the ecochallenge.

Catherine Alexander 4/23/2024 6:41 PMWith the summer heat coming, all of our blinds and drapes stay closed during the day (even if we are home) and ceiling fans are ON! This actually helps to not put as much stress onto our AC units during the hot days.-
shelli moellenhoff 4/24/2024 3:45 PMthat small action helps the indoor temps so much.....I am trying to not flip on the AC until we are steadily into the 90 degree range. Having doors and windows open at night when it cools off is great too! -
Shelley Pinckney 4/23/2024 8:52 PMWe and my parents do the same thing in our home. It really does make a difference.

Catherine Alexander 4/22/2024 7:00 AMFor those of you who live in Southern Nevada, did you know there are convenient locations to drop off paint and other household hazardous items? Republic service has a calendar sharing locations and dates on when/where this service is available. As you declutter your home/garage...place these items off to the side so you can make one trip!-
Herb Aliga 4/23/2024 7:40 AMI have so much paint in my garage. I need to do this soon.
