I revisited some information I had received previously from KCDEM (Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management); thought I would share a link to a book that will guide you through preparedness with one hour of planning/action each month for a year. Really good information: www.DisasterReadyWashington.com.

Such a lovely walk at Fish Park today; beautiful sunshine, babbling water, trees and singing birds. There were many people there with their fur babies. A man walking his small dog told me he had just seen a garter snake. He was grinning ear to ear when he said he hadn't seen one since he was a boy. He was likely in his seventies, but he was so childlike in the moment, I couldn't help but smile. I enjoyed nature poems posted throughout the trails courtesy of Poulsbo Friends of the Library. I can't wait to get on some longer walks and day hikes this summer.

I put together a cute little Easter basket for my grandson this weekend. While I was at the store, I grabbed some plastic eggs and some paper shred. I was getting ready to check out and I asked myself if there were items in my craft room at home that I could use instead. I like to put money instead of candy in the eggs. I remembered that I had a couple of small fabric draw string bags that would work. I also had saved shred from a gift I received previously, and I knew I had a basket. In the end I was able to repurpose items I already had and avoid purchasing unnecessary plastic. I try to be eco-friendly, but sometimes it's the mindless actions like throwing plastic easter eggs in the shopping cart that make me realize I am making choices every single day that impact my environment; consciously or not.

I've been on a journey for many years to replace/upgrade personal care and household products. One item I haven't addressed is clothing stain remover. I've still been using Spray & Wash. It's always done a really good job of getting stains out, but the truth is that it is heavily laden with chemicals. I did not buy a new product. I took some time to research and discovered several homemade solutions using natural products I already have. I have also talked with some family members regarding homemade products, and we are planning on a "party" to try out some recipes for other personal care and household use. It feels good to know that by taking small steps I am improving the health of my home and trying to do my part in protecting the environment.

I'm not sure I learned anything new, but it was a good opportunity for a refresher and to evaluate my current preparedness. Windstorms are prevalent here, and at times very severe. We are prepared with the majority of recommended items. There is also the looming possibility of a major earthquake. I am going to increase my water storage over the recommended amount after seeing the devastating impacts of natural disasters in other areas. I was also reminded that I need an emergency bag in my car. Don't forget your fur babies when evaluating your supplies. <3
