Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

    Challenges:
    1. Forgetting to bring them: It's easy to forget reusable bags when heading out for shopping.
    2. Convenience: Single-use plastic bags are often more readily available and convenient.
    3. Storage: Finding a place to store reusable bags can sometimes be a hassle.

    Easier Factors:
    1. Habit formation: Once you get into the habit of using reusable bags, it becomes second nature.
    2. Environmental motivation: Knowing the positive impact on the environment can be a strong motivator.
    3. Accessibility: Keeping reusable bags in convenient places, like your car or near the door, can make it easier to remember them.

Shortening showers can significantly increase awareness of water conservation by highlighting how much water is used in daily activities. It's a simple yet effective way to see the impact of small changes on overall water usage. 🌍

Here are some other water-saving practices you can adopt in your daily routine:
    1. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth: This can save several liters of water each time.
    2. Fix leaks promptly: Even small leaks can waste a lot of water over time.
    3. Use a bucket instead of a hose to wash your car: This can reduce water usage significantly.
    4. Install water-efficient fixtures: Low-flow showerheads and faucets can help reduce water consumption.
    5. Water plants early in the morning or late in the evening: This minimizes evaporation and ensures more water reaches the roots.
    6. Collect rainwater: Use it for watering plants or other non-potable uses.

Changing my dishwashing habits to fill the sink with water instead of running the tap constantly made me much more conscious.

Instead of pre-rinsing dishes under running water, scrape off food scraps and wash dishes later.
