Spending more time outdoors, helps connect to the environment. You can see the beauty of nature and also smell it. There was a new place, as I saw a hole in a tree, in which I saw a squirrel go in and out of.

In order to stay sustainable, I have started moving my body more often. I have recently started going outside more often to rollerskate. I chose a physical activity that I liked to develop into a habit because it's good for my body. I've noticed that finding a healthy activity that you enjoy increases the chances of establishing a sustainable habit for the long-term results. The trick to keeping good habits is to find time where you can focus on that activity and ensure that it is something you are passionate about so that it doesn't feel like a chore.

Health & Equity Spend Time Outside
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

Since a lot of the world is online with devices, oftentimes we stay inside and don't get the amount of sunlight our bodies need. Or we get accustomed to being inside and don't like being outside. But we can change that. Instead of being inside with our phones and computers, spending at least an hour every day outside can improve our health significantly. From physical activity to reducing fatigue and our body's exposure to Vitamin D, which is a nutrient we absorb for energy, there are many benefits of being outside.

Spending more time outdoors can enhance your sense of place as you are more aware of your surroundings. As one walks around their neighborhood, they notice all the details, big or small, that make it up. Thus making them feel familiar with the area around them leading them to feel their sense of pace. A new place that was exciting to visit was the Silver Creek Trail. It covered a lot of distance and had a lot of beautiful scenery.

How do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?

You can create new sustainability-related habits the same way you create other habits. Which is just by doing them over and over again. This is because habits, by their definition, are routines of behaviors. So if someone wanted to create a new sustainability-related habit, such as making zero-waste meals, that person would need to do it every day consistently.

An environmentally friendly habit I recently cultivated is turning off the electricity when I'm not using it. Whenever I leave my room or see other rooms around my house that don't need electricity, I make sure to turn off the lights. This way over time, the amount of electricity my home uses will decrease.

There are many sustainability-related habits you can adapt to your lifestyle. For instance, with clothes, I like to donate them instead of throwing them out and thrifting to reuse clothes. A simple task you could do is recycling your trash. Another habit is using public transportation such as the bus or riding a bike, as I use it every day! Creating these new habits is a slow and learning process but very possible!

Simple as walking in your neighborhood can enhance your sense of place. Ever since my family got a puppy, I began to explore my neighborhood more when walking my puppy. I discovered a trail that covers the whole street I live on. It made me realize that I could take this trail route instead of walking on the sidewalk with busy cars passing by. This was quite an exciting experience as I discovered a new calming path to my home!

One way that I can reduce my water use is by getting low-flow shower heads. A practice that I already do is limit how long I leave my bathroom sink on.

Today as I walked my dog I decided to take her to new parts of my neighborhood. One thing I realized was that I could easily go to Sligo Creek. I also noticed that my dog was much calmer because there weren’t any cars or dogs barking.
