Basic Needs & Security Make Zero-Waste Meals
How did you incorporate using an entire vegetable (skins, peels, tops, and stalks) during one of your meal preps? What's something new you're going to try that is a zero-waste meal practice?

I made a cauliflower-pepper-cheese casserole for dinner, fed the trimmings to my worm bin and parrot.  Then I re-purposed remainder as a blended cauliflower-cheese soup for lunch.  For breakfast I made a non-dairy/no sugar smoothie of frozen beets, bananas, cauliflower, zucchini, lemons and sweet potato(yam), utilizing frozen summer goodies.

Not actually a letter or poem, but I did have the opportunity to share our work and mission with some lovely ladies over lunch today. There is a lot of interest in the notion of sustainable practices and things that we do that don't make sense AND don't have easy solutions. One participant asked about plastic recycling. It is heartbreaking to see more and more plastic being produced and used in the name of convenience yet with few solutions for responsible disposal. We have to continue looking for solutions!

I'm Karen, food system developer, household sustainability geek and garden gnome in Pendleton Oregon.   I live as low as possible on the entropy ladder and cultivate the good life with as many of my friends, community members and family as possible.  I will chose water, solid waste, transportation, food waste, and .... any other category that makes sense.

I keep meaning to write a poem or post a picture about love for Earth, but haven't quite gotten there yet so I'll recommend to you Robin Wall Kimmerer's 'Braiding Sweetgrass', check it out! I especially loved the audiobook version which the author narrated. Inspiring read!

My coworker and friend brought a delicious meal to share with me. I actually took the time to step away from my desk and enjoy a few minutes of conversation over the meal. What a treat!

Today I took a short shower! I already take short(er) showers (8-mins or so) but I challenged myself to take a 5 minute shower. I have long hair, so it's a bit of a challenge, but turning off the water while soaping makes it possible. Hot water is such a luxury that we often take for granted. Maybe by taking shorter showers, we can imagine how even that short wonderful experience would feel to others who don't have access. Also, did you know that water heating is typically the third largest energy user in US households? There are many good options for saving water AND energy at home.

Hi everyone, I am the director of the Sustainable Living Center in Walla Walla WA! We are working toward a more sustainable future for our community and beyond! Our programs and partnerships serve to address a wide variety of needs. Our Community Energy Efficiency Program provide home energy audits and financial incentives to make recommended home energy upgrades. Our Builders ReSupply store recycles new/used building materials, our Walla Walla Valley Farm to School program works to connect kids with nature in school gardens and encourage the purchase of local foods for school meals and our $mart Business Partners program helps businesses save energy, water, waste and materials. Finally, our outreach and education helps folks learn about what we do and what THEY can do!
I've set up this team platform so that we can connect on a common goal and make a difference for our well-being and that of our unique place. Join me in exploring actions and impacts!
