How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

We always talk a lot and encourage "always learning," by suggesting opportunities for learning, like virtual conferences, professional talks, and online courses. We recognize employees in our company that go further and excel in winning scientific awards.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

Meat is so bad for your body! I have been vegan for over 10 years now, due to dietary AND ethical reasons. Expensive meat dishes are socially equated with social status, bc rich people want to eat rich (expensive) food. It is a status that needs to be "squashed!"

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Having smaller portions may help prevent weight gain. You can always get up and get a little more if you're still hungry. Store leftovers right away in reusable / dishwasher safe packaging.

Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

People that do not pick up their dog waste. I live across the street from a park, and there are many piles of dog waste. This is harmful to the water systems. I hope that the City installs dog waste bins and provides dog waste bags (biodegradable) to encourage more responsible dog owners.

Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

The closest one wasn't too too far away, but it was not conveniently located. The local market chain near me tends to take customer requests/criticism well and into account, so I imagine that if enough people requested it of them, they would consider making the changes.

There are no climate-friendly grocery stores recorded in the map here in or near Cincinnati. This is actually an AWESOME, SUPER USEFUL link, because in my Finance class my group is working with a nonprofit that is trying to propose a grant program for CARB to implement that would help grocery stores in California convert their HFC refrigerant systems to CO2 systems. The need is huge. The average leak rate for an HFC system is 25% annually, and the refrigerants they use have up to 4,000x higher Global Warming Potential (GWP) than CO2 (which is the baseline for GWP at a value of "1"). Project Drawdown's book in 2017 identified refrigerants as the #1 solution to fighting global warming. Unfortunately, in order to replace an entire refrigerant system (the HFC and CO2 systems do not have overlapping components), you'd have to shut much of the store down for about 2 months. The loss in revenue would put a lot of smaller grocery stores out of business. These systems cost between $1-2 million dollars each for an average-sized grocery store. The pressure is on in California, where there are now laws on the books committing the state to reduce their HFCs by 40% by 2030. We are looking at promoting energy efficiency improvements that could help the grocery store save on energy, thereby helping pay for the refrigeration replacement.

Electricity Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?

Air BNB; we support this company a few times a year when we travel. Apple, Google, Facebook; we all use these companies daily.

I would like to see composting pick up as part of trash/recycling pick up in the community. the compost could be picked up by community members for a small fee to use in their garden to offset the cost of running the community compost.

Action Track: Climate Resilience Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

I have worked with DBE's and women-owned business through work in the contracts we strike with subconsultants. I will research local women-owned businesses in the greater LA area to further support them and our local communities.

    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

Purchase products that do not contain palm oil!
