Here is a quick and easy quiz I recommend to calculate your ecological footprint. My biggest carbon footprint came from food, which definitely motivates me to try harder to cut out beef and animal-based products and move towards a plant-based diet.

Here is a 360 degrees view of a green roof designed by the American Society of Landscape Architects - it's simple but imagine how much more appealing (both visually and environmentally) our rooftops could be if we all implemented these green roofs!

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

The water usage and energy waste of producing food that goes uneaten are the two kinds of waste that motivate me.  Meal planning has been great for helping to cut our household food waste.  I am not able to compost on site as I am in a townhouse, but I freeze my bags of compost and take them to our local drop off once a week.  I am also super excited as I ordered my vermicomposting setup, now that it feels safer to ship worms :-) I am excited to share with my daughter, the magic of watching leftovers turn into amazing soil booster for our small garden and the gardens of family members.

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

I have made an effort to only buy my animal proteins from Whole Foods, as they have a grading system for their meat and post the origins of their seafood.  As I am shifting towards a plant based diet, I have taken the time to learn more about the fishing practices and finding out about the sustainability of the producers.  My seafood consumption falls within the guidelines for the United States, however I have learned about a few new fish that I may have to work into the rotation.

A group of Alteryx employees got together over the weekend to volunteer at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano - an amazing community garden that is one of the only organic farms left in the country. The farm grows an incredible diversity of fruits, flowers, herbs and vegetables which produces fresh seasonal produce that can be purchased at their Farm Stand! Over the weekend, we helped with picking Frontera strawberries at their annual TASTE festival!
