REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the clean energy shift?
Shawna Stonum 4/28/2023 8:26 AMOnce we start adding solar panels to our roof, I imagine the neighbors will start asking questions. Net metering using solar is the only renewable option offered by our power company. I am somewhat discouraged and still exploring other options... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Analyze Your Utility BillsWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Shawna Stonum 4/28/2023 8:04 AMIt wasn't as bad as we anticipated, but there's always room for improvement. All heaters have been turned off for the few warm days. Lights are kept off most of the time. Still looking for more opportunities for conservation in our home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or PeaceWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Shawna Stonum 4/27/2023 6:57 AMI have seen Avatar in the past. It is clearly a play on racial issues. The documentary on the Miagi Orchestra in South Africa was a fascinating take on bringing diverse people together by making beautiful music together. Not sure how it relates to Climate Change, but seeing the dwellings of the poorest people there sure puts things in perspective. I plan to watch more of these as I am able. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Make Cleaning ProductsWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Shawna Stonum 4/26/2023 8:14 AMNothing surprising. I needed something pet friendly to clean a guinea pig habitat. Vinegar has many uses and will not harm any living creature. It kills odors effectively (after it air dries and the vinegar smell dissipates). -
Shawna Stonum 4/22/2023 1:47 PMRain barrel is all set up. Thankful the rain has held out long enough for me to get it set up. Now we wait to see if this works! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Shawna Stonum 4/18/2023 8:18 AMIsolation is not good for me. I lose the ability to talk to people without feeling awkward if I hide away. Being the introvert that I am, it is important that I get out of my bubble and interact with people outside. My bet is that I am not alone in this paradigm. Too many people in front of screens and indoors forget how to behave in public or around crowds of people. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Shawna Stonum 4/18/2023 8:12 AMSeparating my work life from my home life has helped me prioritize what needs to get done at home, including family time. It takes discipline to ignore emails and such during off work times.
I think work-life consciousness helps sustain interpersonal relationships and allow for more variety in daily living activities preventing burn out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Shawna Stonum 4/14/2023 7:08 AMPollinators are part of the cycle of life, pollinating our food sources. Without them, we have few other options. I am hoping to attract hummingbirds to my yard. Might take a bit more work to attract them my way given that this yard appears to have been neglected for a few years. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Ecological & Xeriscape GardeningWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Shawna Stonum 4/08/2023 6:56 AMWe just recently bought a house, so no real "landscape" done yet. Previous owners did nothing with the yard. I am considering a rain garden somewhere in my yard, hopefully the front yard and a rain barrel to water the rest. My daughter insists on having grass she can mow, and I want a special area for the dogs. We both want raised gardens (so the dogs can't dig). Time will tell what we plan out and put together. -
Shawna Stonum 4/08/2023 6:52 AMHas anyone tried dehydrating foods? I saw this article: https://www.popsci.com/diy/dehydrating-food/ this morning and thought I might consider trying this with fruits and vegetables that we don't seem to eat fast enough. :)
