COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 60 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED

    Anna Selders 4/22/2024 9:25 PM
    Forests make us healthier
    • Exposure to forests boosts our immune system
    • Spending time around trees and looking at trees reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and improves mood
    • Green spaces in urban areas are just as important as rural forests
    • Spending time in nature helps you focus
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

    Anna Selders's avatar
    Anna Selders 4/19/2024 3:46 AM
Definitely the waste! That's why I try to pick up the waste at least in the area around my house and my street.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    Anna Selders's avatar
    Anna Selders 4/15/2024 5:47 AM
We can invest in clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and resource conservation. This helps accelerate the development of these solutions and drive positive environmental change.

    Anna Selders 4/10/2024 2:16 AM
    What I’ve Learned About Myself:
    • I’ve discovered that I can be more intentional about my choices. Small actions matter.
    • I’ve become more patient and adaptable. Zero Waste Days require flexibility.
    • I’ve realized that my habits influence the environment. By changing them, I contribute positively.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Anna Selders's avatar
    Anna Selders 4/10/2024 2:12 AM
When we pick up litter, we become role models for others. Our actions demonstrate that each individual can make a difference and become an inspiration. Taking the lead creates a ripple effect that encourages a collective effort towards a cleaner and more environmentally-aware society.

Very useful advises, Anna! I really like your #5 - take only what you really need, and not what you might be needing. Sometimes we are acting too cautious about our level of comfort.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal Products
What new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?

    Anna Selders's avatar
    Anna Selders 4/08/2024 3:34 AM
We can drastically reduce the waste we generate and the resources we consume. The advantage of refillable systems is not just environmental, it’s economical too. As consumers only need to invest once in the more durable primary packaging, refills often cost less than the full product.
