  • Reflection Question
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

This is the first time I heard of silvopasture.  After learning about it I wonder why more big farms don't incorporate silvopasture.  I think the biggest advantages are two crops and less environmental problems.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

I started eating a plant based diet a few years ago so dependable fresh food is very inspiring.  I also like getting to know the local farmers.  Tomorrow one of the farmers is bringing me a grape plant and will tell me how to successfully grow it.

Yes! We are so fortunate to have so many excellent farmer's markets in our region!

Learned about ways BioMass can be used for energy.  Very interesting.  Also visited a local mushroom farm and got a tour.  Have been supporting the farm at farmers market so it was good to see where the mushrooms are grown.

Learned about methane digesters today.  The personal ones use plant material and animal dung to make methane to power the stove or dryer.

So much goes to waste, so rethinking how we manage inputs and outputs is essential!

Learning about silvopasture which integrates trees and pasture for a single system for raising livestock to lower methane emissions and to have multiple products.  Very interesting.

I just heard a story on the radio about this too. Probably makes for happier cows too.
