Happy Friday! Way to kill it again this year team!

Climate & Ecosystems Learn About The Climate & Ecosystems SDGs
What was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?

Like all other SDGs so far, the linking factor is that the climate must be understood and protected in order to rebuild healthy ecosystems, but without those healthy ecosystems developing as the climate is worked on, then the climate will struggle. Unlike many of the other SDGs that feel very linear and one to the other, these two SDGs feel far more directly intertwined and dependent on one another to care for the other.

The linking factor between these two SDGs is that basic needs must be met before security can be obtained. Security and strong institutions are incredibly important to developing an advancing society, but those items cannot be met until basic needs of the populace can be met in a non-straining way.

Health & Equity Learn About Equitable Food Access
How is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?

    Levi Pothier's avatar

The more communities that can access food, healthy and whole foods, the better. Access does not mean that an expensive natural grocer opens in an otherwise underserviced neighborhood, it means affordable access. If historical food deserts become more equitable in their access to healthy and whole foods that would indicate it is becoming easier to grow and produce sustainable food, which is the goal.

Climate & Ecosystems Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

    Levi Pothier's avatar
    Levi Pothier 4/26/2022 9:21 AM
Pollinators are paramount to the continuing biodiversity of flowering plant life in our region. Pollinators help to keep healthy populations of flowering species of plants and if the pollinators decline then the flowerings species decline. Who doesn't love a Bee?

Climate & Ecosystems Learn About Invasive Species
What is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?

    Levi Pothier's avatar

English Ivy is a major invasive species in Oregon. The ivy is well known for starving trees of necessary sunlight for photosynthesis processes. The ivy can also cause the tree to be overburdened with weight and make it more susceptible to breakage and possibly full blow over, this is shockingly prevalent in the Park Blocks in Downtown Portland.

IT seems the biggest linking factor across these SDGs is equitable and accessible infrastructure. From safe access to drinking water all the way to school and work access being feasible. The other linking factor was literacy. Globally literacy rates need to increase in order to hit either of these SDGs.

What was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?

I am usually a big fan of a roasted spiced chickpea and carrot bowl on rice I make. It is simple and takes only a bit of time. I will return with the recipe once I write it.
  • Reflection Question
Health & Equity Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
Why is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?

    Levi Pothier's avatar
    Levi Pothier 4/25/2022 9:16 AM
In a large amount of use cases, native and indigenous groups were practicing healthy and sustainable land management in their homes well before most other groups were perceptually aware of the environmental impact they were having on the world around them.

It is important to engage with and learn to incorporate traditional land management practices back into the environment, and to defer to native practices that were successful in the past as possible solutions to very real problems we face today.

Petition for trash and recycling containers to be placed at realistic intervals in the neighborhood by the city. Encourage folks to recycle and dispose of rubbish in a reasonable and less destructive way.

I would also love to encourage my apartment neighbors and others to join in creating a composting space.
