Jeanne's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jeanne Poirier 4/24/2024 4:02 PMHelped weed/clean a back corner of my sister's yard, went to Portland Nursery and got some great plants to put in the ground! Then to Rhododendron Gardens - such wonderful eye candy and apologies for terrible photo of baby duck with mama. Not to get those plants in before tomorrow's rain! -
Jeanne Poirier 4/23/2024 8:40 PMBeautiful day with green hills and wildflowers in bloom. Lots of newborn animals - mostly cows (poor little future burgers) but will share photo of another animal. Taken at Columbia River between Goldendale, WA and Biggs, OR.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Jeanne Poirier 4/23/2024 8:37 PMWas not certain I'd be able to do this one, yet picked today - a day of traveling to Portland to see my sister. Made it a point to not use any paper towel and used handkerchief instead. Dried my hands on my hair instead of using paper towels. Dinner tonight was burrito in foil and nothing went into the garbage can today!! I will try and do this again. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Sustainability Lunch and LearnWho did you engage in your lunch and learn? What resources did you use? How did it go and what did you learn?
Jeanne Poirier 4/22/2024 7:28 PMWe are working on No on 2117 repealing Washington State Climate Commitment Act. AI came up in the conversation among many others and lots of education to do! I pooh-pah'd AI and remembered I had 97 days of music fed to me on Spotify last year - what a hypocrite! We use earth's resources and not aware of our impact. I'd love to change this! -
Jeanne Poirier 4/22/2024 7:23 PMTook my bag of compostables to the bin in Cashmere today. Thank you Winton Composting for all you do for our valley!! -
Jeanne Poirier 4/22/2024 7:21 PMAlways love the days I can take my grand-dog for a walk!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Jeanne Poirier 4/22/2024 7:17 PMThe duct tape, blue tape to secure items at Earth Day events! While I had clamps and other items - planning ahead and knowing the presentation/s and committing to the information could avoid this. Then again, is rubber cement better for the environment than above mentioned tapes?? More re-usable clamps in my planning next year :) -
Jeanne Poirier 4/22/2024 7:10 PMThe zero waste day has me! Eight more days to "git 'er done" or not. Can I do one day without opening the garbage bin and putting something in it which creates methane in landfill?
Blessed Earth Day and full moon greetings!-

Jeanne Poirier 4/21/2024 6:56 PMIt was an overfull eight hours for the Earth Day Fair today!! All outside and an awesome day and event. Wish I'd taken a photo of all the kids making their Pledge of Allegiance to the Earth "ribbons" - I'll never forget the couple times when 4-6 kids read it out loud together! Worth repeating:
I pledge allegiance to the Earth - and all the life which it supports.
One planet, in our care
with sustenance and respect for ALL.
It was an amazing day and I hope y'all have had a great Earth Day weekend!! Look forward to seeing your stories!

Jeanne Poirier 4/21/2024 6:47 PMEven at Leavenworth WA Earth Day Fair it was amazing how little plastic was present! All food vendors used compostable/paper - except kettle popcorn. I thought of doing my zero waste day, yet realized the sheets of paper for our Pledge of Allegiance to the Earth were wax paper - and I used a little of the blue tape . . . Plastic is so hard to avoid and so is a zero waste day!! Nine more days to try and achieve this challenge. Happy Earth Day everyone!
