Kyler's actions
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

Education & Livelihood

Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree

Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG 11
Through my Earth Month Ecochallenge feed, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Health & Equity
Support Indigenous & First Nations Communities
SDG 10
I will spend 25 learning about the past and present indigenous communities in my regions and what I can do to be supportive.

I will make a few homemade cleaning products.

Kyler Morenz 4/27/2023 1:56 PMI've been advocating for waste reduction recently in work and in life. It makes me feel really good! -
Kyler Morenz 4/25/2023 2:20 PMUsing this as a confessional today more than anything, but I unfortunately left the water running longer than anticipated for this morning's shower. I should've shut it off, but now I know to be more cognizant of my usage (of my time) so that I don't negatively impact my water usage.-
Avery Huberts 4/30/2023 7:41 PMAlways great to learn how to be aware of our impacts and ways to improve!

Kyler Morenz 4/24/2023 7:54 AMNot too bad, so far! I'm beginning to settle into being conscious, even more so than usual, about my consumption of products and usage of environmentally unfriendly materials. All good things to be aware of! -
Kyler Morenz 4/21/2023 4:02 PMEarth day is coming and I spent a good chunk of my morning discovering good volunteering opportunities around my community! I highly recommend you all do the same thing EVEN IF it isn't on Earth Day. Remember, the Earth is important every day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian RecipeWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Kyler Morenz 4/20/2023 9:37 AMI had a delicious preparation of lentils with mushroom gravy. My partner thinks it's gross, but I love it! Definitely a staple for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Mend ClothingWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Kyler Morenz 4/18/2023 12:01 PMI suck at mending. But, thankfully, my partner and my mother are both incredibly skilled (at the very least compared to me). So, I was able to mend some old shorts I've been meaning to get fixed! It was rewarding and cheap! -
Kyler Morenz 4/18/2023 11:55 AMAs I continue in this challenge, and I'm curious if others feel this way, but I have all of this momentum with a slowing amount of avenues to use it towards. What I mean by that is, completely all of these one-time actions, I'm slowly getting to actions that aren't feasibly possible for me to do. I'll need to plan better in order to get them all done on time within the month! Of course, that isn't to say I will stop everything I've been doing once May 1st rolls around. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Ecological & Xeriscape GardeningWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Kyler Morenz 4/15/2023 10:20 AMI don't have much land to work with, but I have successfully purchased and used eco-friendly fertilizers from my home's food waste for our garden!-
Kyler Morenz 4/18/2023 12:11 PMGreat to know; Thank you, Noelle! -
Noelle Champ-Gibson 4/17/2023 1:22 PMI only have indoor plants but I like to save my eggshells to use for fertilizer and the plants love it!!

Kyler Morenz 4/15/2023 10:15 AMThe ultimate work-life balance: taking the day off to celebrate a birthday outdoors! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the clean energy shift?
Kyler Morenz 4/14/2023 2:30 PMTo provide them with the facts! I've already offered my knowledge of clean energy resources and tools to my immediate family and partner. Hopefully, we'll gradually change the lives of many people we connect with for the better!
