Explore My Area

Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 120 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.

  • Reflection Question
Land Sinks Support a Community Garden
What are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?

Community gardens allow you to grow food locally and empower your community to grow its own food, rather than spending money and often creating waste. Large scale agriculture also produces a lot of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which can be avoided with small-scale, sustainable farming.
  • Reflection Question
    Land Sinks Buy Bamboo
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

Bamboo products can be purchased online with relative ease. I'm not sure what other wood alternatives are out there but I will look into it.
  • Reflection Question
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I've noticed so many different smells and different types of plants! It has been a sort of meditation for me where I try to stay present and take note of everything around me. I would enjoy walks more if there was less city infrastructure and more nature around me.
  • Reflection Question
    Land Sinks Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Julia Kovtoun's avatar
    Julia Kovtoun 4/30/2021 3:18 PM
I am able to connect with nature and be reminded of its beauty when I am outdoors. This reminds me how precious nature is and that I need to care for it, so that it does not suffer at the hand of humankind.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Julia Kovtoun 4/30/2021 3:17 PM
Meat is harder to produce as a farmer because you have to house, care for, and "process" livestock. Produce is easier and cheaper by comparison. Buying vegetables, fruit, and grains is usually cheaper than buying meat. Eating too much meat is bad for the environment because of all the livestock that needs to be kept to keep up with that demand. It's also bad for our health to eat too much meat.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

I love supporting local producers and also eating the freshest food possible!
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

It allows me to keep food for longer knowing that it's not expired. This helps reduce waste.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

I enjoy my food more, I feel less anxious, I eat slower, which I'm sure is healthier.
  • Reflection Question

Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

Using less energy overall. turning off heat, lights, etc. when it is not necessary.
