  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Learn About Invasive Species
What is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?

European Earthworms! I had no idea that North America was almost absent of earth worms since the last Ice age. They were introduce in the last few centuries with European plants. This has caused a decline in native above ground insect species, potentially by reducing the food source for them and/or their larva. These native insects play important rolls in the ecosystem from pollination to food sources for other wildlife.

I live in the Great Lakes Region Water shed. It is one of the most ecologically diverse watersheds. It is made up of forests, wetlands, grass lands and sand dunes and home to 4,000 species of plants and wildlife.

Pollinators are the base support of the eco system. They allow plants to reproduce, with provides us with food from crops, more plant to clean the air and stabilize our soil. I'm a fan of most pollinators, may favorites that I see in my yard are monarch butterflies, bubble bees, bats, and humming birds. I have a variety of pollinator friendly plants and a bee house already, but plan to add a humming bird bath and bee drinking station.

I find that zip lock baggies are my biggest offender. I have been packing my lunch and storing items in the the fridge using reusable glass containers.

I was surprised by the collard greens, mustard greens, kale and spinach on the dirty dozen list. These are staples and my house. I have not used these lists before but I will definitely be more aware of what I am buying now.
