  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Reduce Single-Use Plastics
What plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?

I have stopped using plastic straws and cups, and am very intentional about carrying my own tumbler and metallic straws to cafes. This took a while to get it into practice, but what worked for me was keeping a tumbler and straw always in my bag, so irrespective of where I'll be going, I have it handy.
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Join A Climate Action Orginization
What area of climate action are you most passionate about and why?

I'm extremely passionate about sustainable agriculture. Seeing huge corporations pumping money into peatland fires for palm oil plantations, and witnessing the drastic effects of these fires in the livelihoods of locals in SEA and the biodiversity in the region, I have become more cautious of the products I consume and their lifecycle. I try and research the products I buy to ensure I'm not indirectly promoting these practices and harming the environment.
  • Reflection Question
    Economy & Communities Induction Cooking
Would you consider using an induction cooking surface? If you have used one before, what do you like about induction cooking?

My current house has a gas stove, but I own a tiny induction stove for my room if I ever want to cook from my space. I love the flexibility when it comes to induction cooking - you can control the temperature, you can add a timer, and even after switching off electric power, you can use the heat of the induction to keep your food warm. I'm excited about the possibility of using induction cooking with electricity generated from renewable sources, so it's a completely green way of cooking.
  • Reflection Question
Basic Needs & Security Calculate Your Water Footprint
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

    Divyanka Kapoor's avatar
    Divyanka Kapoor 4/15/2022 1:47 PM
I try and reuse the water from cooking / chores for my plants and gardening. This ensures my plants get additional nutrients and avoids water wastage.
  • Reflection Question
Education & Livelihood Share Your Eco Habits
How do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?

I have been trying to move away from using shampoo and conditioner bottles to more powder/bar options. The bar/powders I've tried don't work for my hair type unfortunately, so I'm in a search for more sustainable hair care options, in case any one has ideas.

As part of exploring new places, I discovered the Harvard stadium yesterday, one which I usually walk by from outside. There are fellow athletes who climb stairs in the evening - a great workout in a beautiful location with lovely views. Going to be making visits more frequently.

I've become more conscious of each meal I cook. I have been on a zero-waste food model since the last year, but because of the earth month challenge I've been learning new dishes and uses for each vegetable item I consume. Yesterday I made a potato crisps from the peels and used the boiled water from potatoes to make bread.
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

    Divyanka Kapoor 4/11/2022 2:43 PM
I discovered a tiny park filled with trees two streets across from my house. It had a tiny closed entrance. In my morning walk today, I decided to enter and explore, and I'm so glad I did. The park had a quaint zen-ish vibe to it, designed with Japanese torii gate structure. As I stepped in, I felt such a sense of peace and tranquility being surrounded by the lush greens. Definitely going to be a part of my morning routine going forward :)
  • Reflection Question
    Economy & Communities Mend Clothing
What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

    Divyanka Kapoor's avatar
    Divyanka Kapoor 4/08/2022 12:48 PM
Apart from the meditative and empowering experience of mending my own clothes, I felt incredible satisfaction in knowing that what could have been a cloth that would have eventually made its way to a landfill, it now has a longer life and greater days to go by.
  • Reflection Question
Health & Equity Spend Time Outside
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Divyanka Kapoor's avatar
    Divyanka Kapoor 4/06/2022 12:45 PM
Apart from the general physical well-being that gets affected by staring on the screen for long stretches of time,  we face mental and emotional consequences because of the dissociation from the real world. Increased loneliness, lack of stronger relationships, addicitive behavior, weakening of self-discipline and the negative impact of media have the potential to have long-term irreversible harms on the generations to come.
