Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 15 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.

I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 7 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
Drive Less
SDG 13
To reduce CO2 emissions each day, I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG 9
I will mend clothing for myself, family or friends.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3

Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 6 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Volunteer in My CommunityWhat was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?
Divya Jain 4/27/2023 8:53 AMI had the opportunities to volunteer for my local food shelter as a part of sunday school to make meal bags. I was grateful to be part of an organization that was helping to provide basic needs to people who don't have access to food. In the future, I would love to volunteer with an organization that helps homeless. I see many homeless people in my area and wish there was something more in my community to help them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Mend ClothingWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Divya Jain 4/25/2023 8:15 AMI am not skilled at all in mending. However, I had a button fall off my shirt and I decided to sew it back on. After a few googles and a youtube tutorial on how to do it, I actually got it back on and it looks alright! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Analyze Your Utility BillsWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Divya Jain 4/25/2023 8:14 AMMy highest electricity usage is at night. This makes sense because this is when I turn on the AC for sleeping. I don't get a water bill as my apartment pays for it. Even though I don't pay for it, I still try to be conscious of how much water I use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the clean energy shift?
Divya Jain 4/25/2023 8:12 AMI think that starting by talking to friends and other people in your own circle is a great way to do this. I have a few friends who are moving to new apartments who will get new electricity providers. This is a great opportunity to switch to green energy. -
Divya Jain 4/24/2023 5:39 AMThis challenge is going well for me. I enjoy being able to pause everyday and reflect on my daily habits and what I can do to contribute to the earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Calculate Your Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Divya Jain 4/24/2023 5:38 AMOne thing I will do to reduce my water use is commit to continuing to take short showers and only running my laundry machine and dishwasher when they are full. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Know Your ProduceWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Divya Jain 4/24/2023 5:38 AMI was surprised that some of the items that I buy regular are part of the "dirty dozen" that should be bought organic. I never really buy organic because I didn't think there was a big difference but now I know that there is! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or PeaceWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Divya Jain 4/21/2023 8:25 AMI participated in a Deloitte training about equity in which i learned some really interesting concepts of how to activate equity within an organization or corporation. It helped me realize that there are so many social actions that we can participate in that contribute to a better world. -
Divya Jain 4/21/2023 8:19 AMI enjoy thinking about these challenges throughout the day and it helps me realize that many people doing small things can help make a big collective impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian RecipeWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Divya Jain 4/19/2023 6:10 AMI made a hot salad type of dish with sweet potatoes, chickpeas, and cauliflower with a garlic butter sauce. IT was good and easy to meal prep for lunch with. It's fun to try new recipes because I like cooking,
