Holly's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint

Basic Needs & Security

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Holly Irion 4/30/2023 6:48 AMI find that when I have a poor work/life balance I tend to consume more (buying unnecessary things, eating poorly, eating out more, etc), just as a way to reward/treat myself. I am much more balanced overall when I am mindful of how my time and mental energy are being spent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Reduce Animal Product ConsumptionWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Holly Irion 4/30/2023 6:47 AMI find the tastiest meatless options are the options I already was eating (typically breakfast foods), like oatmeal, yogurt, etc. I find that I don't usually use meat substitutes b/c my family doesn't like them, so I just cook things they do like (beans, etc). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Holly Irion 4/17/2023 9:18 AMI think one of the biggest implications is a lack of connection to nature, which would make it easier for us to make decisions that would negatively impact our climate/planet/etc. I think a strong connection to nature holds us more accountable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Holly Irion 4/11/2023 7:25 AMWe are going to be switching out our old hot water heater to a heat pump hot water heater.-
Deborah McGloine 4/16/2023 9:26 AMHello Holly - my husband did a great deal of research when we replaced our hot water heater - let me know if you would like information on what he installed!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Take 5-Minute Or Less ShowersWith 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?
Holly Irion 4/07/2023 5:18 AMI think my family and I could start turning the water off when we're brushing our teeth. Also, we typically have to leave a slow drip in our upstairs bathroom sink for a lot of the winter b/c the pipes aren't insulated properly in the wall. We plan on fixing that this summer.-
Deborah McGloine 4/08/2023 1:23 PMHello Holly - These are great ways to save on water - I am looking into a rain barrel to water my plants this summer.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Practice MindfulnessWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Holly Irion 4/05/2023 4:58 AMI'm finding that my mindfulness practice feels more impactful in the morning when I first wake up. I try not to reach for my phone immediately each morning. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Chat With A NonprofitWhat was one nonprofit organization that was exciting to learn about?
Holly Irion 4/03/2023 10:34 AMIn planning our mental health fair I have been reaching out to several nonprofit organizations. I am always excited to hear about the work of PeopleInc's Rose House, including their respite stay and warm line. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Mend ClothingWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Holly Irion 4/03/2023 5:08 AMI spent some time with my daughter teaching her how to sew. She's been really interested in it recently, so this was the perfect opportunity. -
Holly Irion 3/30/2023 10:15 AMLooking forward to the challenge this year!-
Deborah McGloine 4/01/2023 5:54 AMThank you for leading us! Let's do this!
