Laurie's Actions

Industry

Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion

Multiple Industry Solutions

I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

Completed
One-Time Action

Industry

I will be Less Material in a Material World

If I live on campus I'll follow FreeUse on Insta (@bard.freeuse) (and I'll donate there as well) in support of a circular economy.  Away from Bard I will find sustainable clothing options, avoiding fast fashion retailers, valuing long-lived clothing and supporting Bard-born orgs like Thrift to Fight and Cahoots.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Electricity

Communicate the need to Price Carbon

Thousands of economists agree that we need to put a price on carbon pollution. There's a 'carbon cashback' bill in Congress introduced this week in the House that will do that - returning money to households. We need to mobilize around this as a best first step (and do everything else in this challenge, too!)

Completed
One-Time Action

Electricity

Communicate With My Elected Officials

Onshore Wind Turbines, Offshore Wind Turbines

I will write or call 3 elected official(s) telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.

Completed

Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management

Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure

I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.

Composting, Reduced Food Waste

I will start a compost bin where I live.

Completed

Smaller Portions

Reduced Food Waste

I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

COMPLETED 4

Advocate For More Packaging Options

Multiple Industry Solutions

I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.

Uncompleted
One-Time Action

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Attend GATHER Screening on April 18th, 7PM.

Kick off Earth week with a screening of Gather, "an intimate portrait of the growing movement amongst Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide."

Completed
One-Time Action

Count Your Steps & Share

Count how many steps it takes to get from one point to another on campus or where you live. For example, count how many steps it takes to get to Kline from Robbins. DM the BardE3 or Bard Office of Sustainability Insta with the number of steps you counted and we’ll use the info to make posts about walkability! @bardsustainability @barde3bos

I just wrote to Aldi and Hannaford to ask them whether they were planning on getting climate friendly refrigerants in the stores near Bard College.  I did it quickly through their national website; let's see how quickly I get a response!   "Good afternoon, I am participating in the worldwide Drawdown Ecochallenge for Earth Month along with students at Bard College.  One action is to look for nearby markets with climate-friendly refrigerants and policies.  I noticed you have some locations about an hour away that are on the climate friendly refrigerant map available through EIA.  Can you let us know what your plans are in the Kingston, NY store?
    Thank you! Laurie Husted"

this will take more directed work. Both auto replied that I could reach out to them. Which I had just done. Hmmm.
  • Reflection Question
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Laurie Husted's avatar
    Laurie Husted 4/22/2021 12:33 PM
The nearest climate friendly market listed in the database is over an hour away.  But we have an Aldi nearby as well as Hannaford markets and they are listed as having climate-friendly locations elsewhere.  To encourage our local markets to follow the lead of sister locations I will  try to write the national group to see where they are in their planning. I will also try to reach a local owner.

Tonight I will be joining Bardians and our community in watching Gather to learn about Native Americans and food sovereignty - anyone can join - register (7pm EST) https://linktr.ee/BardEATS.  I already read a bit about Traditional Ecological Knowledge - amazing note in the Yale360linked article: Aboriginal Australians were the first to observe that kites hunt their prey by dropping burning branches to start new brush fires.

the ramps (wild onions) are finally up so I've clipped a few leaves for our salad tonight.  I also biked to all my errands today - including a farmstand, the market, and also to put up yard signs for our town clean up day -   April 24 !
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

one of our farmstands somehow stayed open all year through this NY winter!  Very lucky to have local farms who can do greenhouse production and provide a place for to sell locally made value-added food and other products during the long winter.

Just over 500 steps from my office to Campus Center - such a walkable campus. Find the trails this spring!
  • Reflection Question
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Laurie Husted's avatar
    Laurie Husted 4/07/2021 2:11 PM
Today I joined the NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management civic group to learn about refrigerant  leak detection methods - and how we can make progress towards lowering NY GHG pollution by 3% if we address them. Now’s  the time to act - we can ask supermarkets to stop the leaks
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Laurie Husted's avatar
    Laurie Husted 4/07/2021 2:07 PM
I love that it’s not waste if we turn it into compost - and improve our soil quality
