  • Reflection Question
Health & Equity Learn About Gender Diversity
Why is equity for gender diverse individuals important for a just and sustainable society?

Equity and understanding for all ensures that as a society we work together and look out for everyone's best interests, and not just those of certain privileged groups of people, while marginalizing others and leaving them out of resources they deserve. I was especially happy that this activity was centered around trans and nonbinary individuals, as they are often overlooked in discussions of gender equity/equality, and as a member of the LGBT community myself I always want to do my part in lifting up trans and nonbinary voices! Even further than the provided reading I did today, I regularly watch YouTube videos made by trans women, so that my feminism can be all-encompassing and intersectional, and I encourage others to do so as well!

Climate & Ecosystems Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
What ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?

Today I participated in SU Serve, and we used recycled tires as mulch for the areas around trees and bushes. This is an excellent way to recycle the rubber waste from old tires, and create a nice looking park.
  • Reflection Question
    Education & Livelihood Work-Life Balance
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

Practicing a work-life balance allows me to have the mental energy that I need to put towards the things that I'm passionate about. Rather than stumbling through the days, I can make more conscious choices about how I spend my time, money, and energy, and which resources and companies I'm supporting.
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon Impact
What is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

I took the quiz and found out that my apartment here on campus roughly equates to using the resources of 3.4 Earth's a year. I think this is mostly due to the kind of housing we live in, which points to a larger issue that doesn't always fall on the individual. That being said, my roommates and I often try to reduce the trash that we have, and I also do not drive, which reduces my carbon footprint.
  • Reflection Question
    Economy & Communities Induction Cooking
Would you consider using an induction cooking surface? If you have used one before, what do you like about induction cooking?

From my understanding, the stovetop that I have at home is an induction surface. It definitely feels quicker to heat up, and it was nice to learn that I am already participating in a better environmental practice!

I have not been practicing mindfulness as much as I would like to, which seems counterintuitive because I've been more stressed recently. My goal for the rest of the week is to schedule some time for meditation for myself! I'm also making more of an effort to recycle properly, which I'm proud of myself for!
  • Reflection Question
    Health & Equity Communicate Constructively
What is easy for you to do when having a constructive conversation and what is challenging? What tips do you have for having a constructive conversation?

My parents have been asking me a lot of questions about my future lately, which can be stressful. I know that they don't mean to cause me stress though, so I've been practicing thinking on my own about how I want to respond, rather than reacting with emotion in the moment. I think this can be helpful for others too, as sometimes we say things that we don't mean when we become overwhelmed.

I forgot to update my daily actions over the past few days but I spent probably a total of 4 or 5 hours outside between the last two days! It was really nice to take the mental break from work and spend time with my friends, and also to take the time away from my phone! Hopefully this nice weather sticks around :)
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Learn About Invasive Species
What is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?

    Carissa Holaska's avatar
    Carissa Holaska 4/11/2022 1:18 PM
I had no idea that cats can be invasive species. Though I don't personally own a cat, I learned that when they hunt birds and small mammals they can interfere with the local ecosystem, and I think this makes it even more important to rescue strays and keep the population of feral cats to a minimum.
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Reduce Single-Use Plastics
What plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?

    Carissa Holaska's avatar
    Carissa Holaska 4/09/2022 12:03 PM
A lot of the food that I buy comes in single use plastic containers. For example, even at our own school, I often buy fruit from Hawk's nest which comes in plastic containers. I always recycle these containers, but I wish there was a way to purchase these items in a more sustainable way. To offset this use of plastic, I always use reusable grocery bags when I go to off-campus grocery stores.
