Kaitlin Geballe
"Spend Earth Month learning about larger ecosystems that I am involved in that impact climate change. Learn about how my interactions with people, my community, etc., are just as important as choosing to recycle. Explore more ways to live a sustainable life!"

Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG #14 & 15
I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard, or volunteer in my community: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

For an upcoming vacation, I will plan a staycation in my region.

Communicate Constructively

Kaitlin Geballe 4/30/2022 5:25 PMI didn’t necessarily expect this challenge to actually result in my learning a ton, but I actually did get some surprising information that I can act on (like knowing which fruits and veggies have a negative/“dirty” impact) -
Reflection QuestionHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Kaitlin Geballe 4/30/2022 5:07 PMThe impact is huge to health, and bad health drains so many resources! I personally need outside time for my own mental health! -
Reflection QuestionEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Kaitlin Geballe 4/27/2022 3:35 PMWork life balance means having more time to take care of myself, which can include making healthy meals rather than purchasing packaged meals, and eating leftovers more often when working from home, rather than buying new food at lunch in the office. This can help reduce food waste! -
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Ecological & Xeriscape GardeningWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Kaitlin Geballe 4/27/2022 3:31 PMWe have consulted with a conservation-focused arborist who is helping us maintain our hemlock evergreen (a species declining w/climate change) and helping us choose native trees to act as screening along the north side of our yard. We are also returning the wood chips from the tree pruning back to the earth at the base of the tree and focusing on "forest"-izing a part of our yard -
Reflection QuestionEducation & Livelihood Plan A Staycation in Your CommunityWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
Kaitlin Geballe 4/13/2022 9:11 PMWe're excited to spend time in our state's wine country. We'll drive in a hybrid vehicle and do lots of walking around the area when we're there!
