Dirk's actions

Climate + Air

Leave your car and ride your bike

the journey to work or even shopping. Many journeys are shorter than 12 km and can easily be cycled; this is good for the environment and reduces CO² emissions

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Biodiversity and Me

I will spend at least 27 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 90 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Learn About Water Justice in My Area

I will spend at least 10 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

During the lunch break we talked about how we can change things by choosing the right food. We want to use more regional and seasonal food. Food that has traveled a long distance is bad for the climate.

That's true, but also food from the Region can sometimes have a lot of CO2. It is quite difficult.
When you think of apple for example: When you eat them during the season, thdy have low CO2m but when you eat regional apples in spring or summer they come from the cold storage which needs a lot of energy and that is bad. Or take tomatoes, we only have a short period of harvest, so buying from Spain can afterwards be better for the climate as they are not from cold storage.

I agree, the is the power of the consumers, when we make the right choices the offer eg. of the stores will change and become more local.

We can enter in the ecochallenge how many drinking straws we have given up in a day. Yesterday I saw a break in which it is shown what happens to the packaging waste of the industrialized nations. It is frightening to see how little of it can be properly recycled. We export the garbage that we no longer want to have to the poorest countries in the world. Out of sight, out of mind. Saving a few straws is just a small start, we need to get started and really care about avoiding waste. Single-use packaging may be convenient, but it's not the solution. We need reusable packaging in all areas.

Just 100 years ago, drinking straws were called straws because they were made of straw. Somehow clever the people of the past, after drinking they just threw away the straws and everything was OK. Today, we make drinking straws from a material that lasts 100 years and only use it once for 10 minutes and then throw it away. I am glad that plastic drinking straws have been banned in Europe. Drinking straws made of glass or metal are a good alternative.

I would also ask if straws are really necessary and question that. In some restaurants they offer noodle straws, a good alternative but not for people with gluten allergy.

We have now decided to install a PV system on the roof of our house. If this works as expected, we will only need electricity from the grid in winter. I'm curious to see what it looks like after a year

Well done Dirk! We need to follow your good example in all our Emerson locations!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Dirk Eder's avatar
    Dirk Eder 4/14/2024 11:45 PM
Today, people are often blinded by the advertising on television and quickly reach for a household cleaner. Just ask grandma how she cleaned in the past. Even today, windows can still cleaned with vinegar water. This saves money and is good for the environment
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Dirk Eder's avatar
    Dirk Eder 4/13/2024 12:07 PM
We generally do not use such disposable products in our household. Only the garbage bags for our residual waste are made of plastic for hygienic reasons

Simply leave your personal comfort zone and ride your bike to the supermarket. In the city, you can often travel faster by bike than by car. You don't have to look for a parking space. Most purchases fit in two bicycle bags. Don't look for an excuse why you have to drive by car, Leave your comfort zone and ride a bike.

I no longer buy my milk in the supermarket. I drive to a dairy farmer in the neighboring community and get the milk in a glass bottle. This saves me around 3 disposable packaging per week, which is 156 per year

I started riding my e-bike to work three years ago in the spring. Since then, I have only traveled smaller distances in the area with my e-bike and try to only use the car for longer distances or when doing a big purchase. As a result, I think I can do a lot for my physical fitness and also for the environment
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Learn About Water Justice in My Area
Who is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?

I live in the middle of Germany. The effects of water scarcity are not particularly significant here. However, due to climate change, things have gotten worse over the last few years
