  • Reflection Question
    Buildings Online Energy Audit
What are your next steps for saving energy?

We have begun house hunting and one of the things that will we are keeping in mind is the ability to convert the house to solar.  Many of the houses where we live are easily 100+ years old.  While we love the idea of having an old brick house, we really need to weigh the amount of electricity and gas it will take to keep the house running.  Looking at potential upgrade abilities for solar, insulation, etc will be a major deciding factor.  Until then we will continue to walk more, drive less, utilize lights when only in those rooms, keep electronics unplugged when not in use, etc.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have replaced using plastic straws with reusable straws throughout my household.  I carry them with me in my car so if I am out with my children we can still not utilize disposable straws.  My children have noticed this shift and are on their own now refusing the plastic straws when offered. We are also swapping out plastic wrap for reusable beeswax wraps, and reusable washable storage bags for ziplocs. When purchasing produce we just leave it loose in the cart.  Reusable cups are also taken to work and outings instead of disposables.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

I am finding that eating smaller plates of food throughout the day instead of 1 or 2 big meals is leaving me with more energy and not feeling weighed down/sleepy.  I am able to focus more and am more productive.  My food choices are also healthier.

I love this! Has it also helped you sleep better at night? I find that the better focus and energy during the day helps me with a more restful night.
  • Reflection Question
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

Not a single store in my ENTIRE STATE is listed as a climate friendly supermarket.  This just helps reaffirm my reasonings for utilizing services such as Imperfect Foods and shopping at my local outdoor farmers markets more often.

The high five is for your research and comment... NOT the lack of climate-friendly supermarkets. I'm so glad Imperfect Foods and farmers markets are available!

What are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?

    Sarah Dolan's avatar
    Sarah Dolan 4/21/2021 12:45 PM
The most pressing issue in my area, besides acceptance, is the access to proper healthcare for those trying to transition to their true selves.  Doctors that will perform these procedures are hard to find here, and once found navigating the healthcare system to meet all the "requirements" makes it almost impossible to complete their transition without going out of state.
