Reflection QuestionBasic Needs & Security Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic NeedsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Megan Confer 4/29/2023 7:01 PMI watched a documentary about living a minimalist life on Netflix and it helped remind me of the benefits reducing our consumption of things, including benefits to our own mental health and the planet. I've already gone through some things in my house and put them in a box that I will take to Goodwill. -
Reflection QuestionClimate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon ImpactWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Megan Confer 4/28/2023 7:16 AMI will try to eat less beef and lamb and buy more locally produced and in season foods. This is something that I can choose to take action on weekly as I shop for groceries. My husband and I only have one car, so we're helping reduce our carbon footprint in some ways already! -
Reflection QuestionBasic Needs & Security Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian RecipeWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Megan Confer 4/28/2023 7:13 AMI made a sweet potato chickpea curry that only had 5 ingredients: sweet potatoes, chickpeas, yellow onion, coconut milk, and green curry paste. It was delicious and I can't believe I only needed 5 ingredients and it was vegan! -
Reflection QuestionBasic Needs & Security Calculate Your Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Megan Confer 4/27/2023 6:58 AMAfter learning about my household's water use, I will commit to taking shorter showers. We have reduced our household water usage by recently changing our yard to have xero-scaping so that it would require less water to maintain. -
Reflection QuestionBasic Needs & Security Practice A Sharing EconomyWhat benefits does the sharing economy offer to you and others? If you are a little shy to try, what could be a first step for you?
Megan Confer 4/27/2023 6:53 AMI've been a member of my local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook for a few years and it has been tremendously helpful. I frequently pick up used toys and clothing for my young kids, which is such a financial benefit because kids grow out of things so quickly. I then pass these on to the next family as my kids get older. It's a financial benefit for all parties and better for the planet since we are not purchasing new clothes and toys -
Reflection QuestionHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Megan Confer 4/26/2023 12:21 PMA culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens will have a lot of negative implications. Spending time outside gives us essential vitamin D, usually involves more physical activity than activities that we do inside, gives us time for reflection and in general promotes happier moods. A life that is focused on screens leads to less time for reflection, negative implications on your physical health in terms of sitting and eye health, and likely has negative implications to mental health if the time spent on screen is spent doom scrolling news or comparing yourself to others on social media. -
Reflection QuestionEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Megan Confer 4/26/2023 12:16 PMPracticing work-life balance affords me more time to spend outside, to meal plan so that I prevent less waste, and to overall spend more time thinking about how I can live more sustainably
