Stay on the Ground

SDG 11

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening

SDG 14, 15

Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education & Livelihood

Plan A Staycation in Your Community

SDG 11

For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Research Impact Investing

SDG 8

Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Economy & Communities

Choose LED Bulbs

SDG 7

I will replace 1 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Support Local Pollinators

SDG 15

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature

SDG 13, 14, 15

I will watch 2 documentaries about climate change.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Plant a Tree

SDG 15

On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 3 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Basic Needs & Security

Make Zero-Waste Meals

SDG 2

I will cook 2 meals with zero waste each day.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Basic Needs & Security

Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers

SDG 6

I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Basic Needs & Security

Calculate Your Water Footprint

SDG 6

I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Basic Needs & Security

SDG 2

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Health & Equity

I listened to a podcast (can't recall the name). About the UK, the sustainability of the flower business. Most of UK source their flowers from Africa during the cold season. The host was advocating that we think about where we source our offseason items (whatever it may be), because there an environmental impact to ship/supply chain infrastructure to send things around the world. Roses are offseason for UK in the winter, choose another variety. Relatable for any of the things we buy, how important we need it, no matter where you live.

Last week, while strolling through a nearby state park, there was garbage on the trail. I am going to carry a bag with me from now on and pick up the garbage. Instead of complaining about the problem, it's much better to part of the solution :-)

I found a way to give back. Read it somewhere in our newsletter. a place to round out your credit card change purchase and plant a tree to your spare change. It's called "Plant Your Change". Loving all the ideas out there.

Sometimes a vegetarian meal takes more planning than you think if you are like me, an omnivore who generally eats very little meat and lots of veggies. I am making vegetarian biryani fried rice today. It calls for a base of stock to cook the rice. I only have chicken stock in my pantry. Lesson, stock your pantry with vegetarian fundamental ingredients so that you can actually make a 100% v meal.

I just realized I shared a podcast suggestion and forgot to add the link. So here you go - enjoy the story of the Mob boss, a garbage boat, and the birth of US residential recycling with a huge laugh. Hollywood actually made a movie out of the event also, I looked it up. Today's gardening project was a total failure on my part. From my hydroponic machine, I transplanted my seedlings to a soiled pot, to get them ready for ground planting in a few weeks. My plants immediately died by that evening, and I learned that water to soil, is transplant shock. It sorely reminded me that plants are living things and although they don't voice their pains, doesn't mean they are not alive. It is a reminder that our Earth is a living ecosystem!
