YAY! We have reached the final day of the Earth Month EcoChallenge!

I just wanted to say how inspired I was by all the actions we took as a team and all the support, comments, and reflections that came through on the Team Feed. I have learned so much from the Challenge and my team mates. Thank you for all your hard work making positive change!

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

What concerns me most is that people, companies, politicians won't act in time to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

That being said, I'm super grateful for challenges like this where I not only learn new habits that are better for the planet but also learn about all the innovative groups out there trying to make positive change.

Big thank you to Val for sharing the list she found of products that contain palm oil. It is quite shameful that companies have found ways to use palm oil using other names :(

I will use the list to continue to eliminate these products from our household.

What are your next steps for saving energy?

I couldn't find an online energy audit tool but was happy to participate in a webinar focused on home retrofits. I have two items on my to-do list...

The first is looking for a contractor that can install "green" insulation in my attic in order to keep the upper floor warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The second has to do with how we power our electric vehicle. We are looking into whether or not it is possible to have a solar panel just to supply the energy we need to charge our car. Fingers crossed.

What are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?

    Lucrezia Chiappetta 4/28/2021 5:58 PM
Thanks to the Town of Caledon I didn't have to do too much research on the topic of energy retrofits...they arranged for a free workshop on the HERO Program during Earth Week.

The session focused on energy-efficient upgrades in heating/cooing systems, insulation, windows, hot water heating and reducing air leaks. The session also highlighted available rebate programs. Looking forward to researching "green" insulation options for my attic which is severely lacking.

The benefits aside from heating/cooling savings are improved comfort and GHG reductions.

What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Lucrezia Chiappetta's avatar
    Lucrezia Chiappetta 4/28/2021 7:21 AM
I would like to focus more on the following Rs...

Repurpose or Repair - Sometimes I am quick to dispose of or donate items that we no longer need or are broken. I'd like to be more conscious of the ways in which items could be repurposed or repaired.

Refuse - "refusing to accept or support products or companies that harm the environment." This also means that I will do a better job of researching companies or products before I make a purchase.

Hey everyone...we are a few days away from the end of the EcoChallenge ;) Let us know - which actions were a challenge? Which new habits will be permanent moving forward?

If you have some time, be sure to answer a few of the reflection questions associated with the actions you've chosen.

I am trying to find a time to call our provincial MPP. I decided I will call her and ask her about why the government is doing and proposing all these awful things and refer to some hot topics (413, Bill 257 etc.) to express my anger (politely, of course). I figured that even though Bill 257 has already passed, it is better to call than not to call. I haven't been able to get through so far, but I keep trying.

Litter, Litter, Litter...unfortunately, what I've noticed most on my walks is an excessive amount of litter. The "plawking" is helping but I don't want to make my walks all about picking up other peoples garbage.

What I've enjoyed is spending a little extra time with my toddler. The pace may be slow but the company and conversation is priceless :)

I was invited to talk to my nephew's grade one class today...they wanted to learn more about how to take care of the earth and apparently, I'm an environmentalist (according to Liam) ;) I had a great time and the kids were awesome! Feeling so special that out of all the cool people in his life, he wanted to share what I did.
