Economy & Communities
Watch a Documentary About Economy, Energy, or Industry
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will watch 2 documentaries about economy, energy, or industry.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Basic Needs & Security
Watch a Documentary About Food, Water, or Basic Needs
SDG 6
I will watch 2 documentaries about food, water, or basic needs.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 5 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Climate & Ecosystems
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that shows how sustainability / the energy transition already shows up in my daily life (e.g., electric vehicles, paper packaging…), and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Education & Livelihood
Watch a Documentary About Education or Work
SDG 4
I will watch 5 documentaries about education or work.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 30 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
Create & Share A Love Letter, Poem, Song or Picture
SDG 14, 15
I will express my love and gratitude for our planet by writing a love letter, poem, song or taking a picture. I will share this in the Ecochallenge feed or on my social media.
Climate & Ecosystems
Attend Emerson's Global Earth Week Webinar
On Wed 19th April, I will attend Emerson's Global Earth Week Webinar to learn about the importance of individual action in our collective journey to sustainability.
Climate & Ecosystems
Sign up to receive news on Sustainability at Emerson
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY and WITH news.
Climate & Ecosystems
TAKE EMERSON'S SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING
I will take at least one of the Emerson Global Environmental Sustainability Training modules available on the Global Learning Center to learn more about this important topic for the company.
Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG 2
I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Reduce use of paper napkins
Everyday people use a minimum of 2 paper napkins in office after washing hands in cafeteria or after going to the loo. At a times this number goes up to 8 to 10 per day. By carrying a personal cloth handkerchief, I am saving paper daily.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Vineet Borse 4/28/2023 2:50 AMRecently used Bael fruit (Aegle marmelos) aka the sacred tree of Lord Shiva.
I could bring abundantly from a tree in my backyard in my hometown.
We extracted the juice out of it and we had a cool summer drink. It's benefits are endless.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 8:24 AMTravel for staycations nearby or plan ahead whenever possible so that we can avail train or bus services. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Analyze Your Utility BillsWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 4:30 AMAfter analyzing my utility bills I realized I can save on energy and water by -
1. Sealing the house for energy leakages for effective cooling during summers and conserving heat during winters.
2. Remove water leakages at home by fixing them immediately. Install aerated spray taps.
3. Using energy efficient light bulbs, water heaters, oven and air conditioners. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your energy audit?
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 4:21 AMThe most surprising thing I learnt about energy audit is how much of a loss of energy happens due to poor constructions and gaps around windows and doors which could render our air-conditioning ineffective. Also we could be paying 20 to 30% more towards our electricity bills due to usage of old water heaters or ACs in our rooms which have a rating of 3 stars or lower. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon ImpactWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 4:03 AMThe practice, which I plan to act on + would continue, to help reduce my carbon footprint -
1. Eat more vegetarian meals.
2. Use public transport like a bus or a train or drive than using flight trips for domestic travels.
3. Advocate for installation of solar heaters in our housing society.
4. Talk within family and friends around to minimize food waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Calculate Your Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 3:29 AM2 best ways which one can start practicing reducing water use -
1. Check your taps, flushes, hoses for leakage once every 45 days. You might be surprised not every leakage needs a plumber's hand - a simple replacement of worn-out washer or tightening the valve fixes it.
2. While leaving your home for a long vacation make sure to turn off the main water supply valve of your house - this way you travel free of any leakage headaches which might welcome you on your return from vacation!! -
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 3:15 AMHundreds and thousands have toiled under the scorching sun of summer,
to grow the food which so comfortably we eat.
think of food as the fruit of labor of thousands of hours,
rather than just rice and wheat.
millions die due to lack of food, so is their fate,
but we are lucky to have every time enough in our plate.
we may never go to the fields to produce the food,
but my friend 'food saved is food produced'.
so lets take a vow today to put in our plate only that much which we can eat,
so that even a single single grain may not go waste

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Plan A Staycation in Your CommunityWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
Vineet Borse 4/24/2023 3:09 AMA staycation, which literally means staying in one's own country than going for a holiday trip abroad or staying at home and taking short trips to explore around near your region. The best staycations which I am always excited about is to explore the western ghats, the lakes around these ghats and the picturesque beaches of the Konkan belt. All of which is within a 2 to 5 hours' drive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Vineet Borse 4/12/2023 8:10 AMOne might argue that using the internet today gives us access to a huge amount of knowledge! But wait - what our grandparents and parents say about spending time on screens is true too. Much of the data collected in article below is really noteworthy of why we should change our culture!
