Marita's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 4 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Climate & Ecosystems
Sustainable Transportation
Check action if 90% of your transportation usage each day is sustainable/low-emission. This includes: walking/running, biking/e-bikes/velomobiles, public transportation, electric/Hydrogen car, carpooling. As much as possible, don't fly or use gas cars. ............................................................... STATS: Road travel accounts for ~75% of transport emissions. Most of this comes from passenger vehicles – cars and buses – which contribute 45.1%. The other 29.4% comes from trucks carrying freight. Since the entire transport sector accounts for 21% of total emissions, and road transport accounts for three-quarters of transport emissions, road transport accounts for 15% of total global CO2 emissions.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Marita Arevalo 4/19/2023 1:43 PMIt's more than changing the light bulbs, it's getting everyone in the house to keep unnecessary lights off. We have created a fun that you pay into if you leave a light on. Then we will either donate to a food bank or buy food items to donate.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Take 5-Minute Or Less ShowersWith 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?
Marita Arevalo 4/17/2023 8:23 AMI am also making sure the washing machine has a full load, which has cut down on water. This one was hard, but I am using the dishwasher more which believe it or not seems to be less water usage than washing them by hand each day. -
Marita Arevalo 4/17/2023 8:19 AMI think I am doing really well and getting the support and engagement from family as well. I really want this to be lifetime changes for all of us. It feels so good to know that you're making a little difference. We stayed at a hotel that did not recycle, so we too our items to another location that did have recycle bins. That felt really good to take that extra step. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Make Cleaning ProductsWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Marita Arevalo 4/17/2023 8:15 AMIt was surprising that we could make a cleaning product with all natural ingredients. I made a leaner for my stove top and it worked better than the one I use will all bad chemicals! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Mend ClothingWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Marita Arevalo 4/17/2023 8:13 AMI am not skilled at all but my daughter had a couple items she was going to discard, and I was able to fix them b9oth so that she can still wear them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Marita Arevalo 4/11/2023 5:25 PMThere are so many but the first couple that come to mind for my family are isolation and health. I have been in a room where every member of my family is on their phone and either not talking to each other or talking, but not really paying attention. Too much screen time and not being outside affect your eyes, your mood, and your brain. I think of that movie Wall-E. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Donate FoodWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Marita Arevalo 4/04/2023 2:35 PMI need to do this more often and make it a monthly habit. It connects to my value of compassion. I watch videos of people who take food to the homeless and I envy their courage. I haven't done that yet, for fear of safety but I will continue to spend and extra $20/week for food that I can specifically donate to my local church foodbank. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon ImpactWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Marita Arevalo 4/04/2023 2:31 PMWe don't have an electric car, but we do have a hybrid and have decided to commit to making that our main commute vehicle. My family is also committed to cutting our shower times and turning off the lights. Only using necessary lighting. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities TRASH & PACKAGING AWARENESSLooking at the trash/recycling your household has produced, what are some ways you can reduce this amount? What products can you stop buying? Are there ways to get the products you need without packaging?
Marita Arevalo 4/04/2023 2:27 PMWe are focused on purchasing items that are in recyclable containers. and making sure to always have our reusable bags when shopping. We purchased a water cooler because we broke our habit and have been using plastic water bottles :( -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Share Your Eco HabitsHow do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?
Marita Arevalo 4/04/2023 2:23 PMI am constantly learning habits that my family and I need to change in order to add to the positive impact. As a family we talk about it as much as we can and hold each other accountable. Mostly my daughter catching my husband lol. We are working together and trying hard to make a difference.
