What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

There's so much that a community can do to be sustainable.  What's best is that many of these changes are already being done in multiple cities in the world.
Here are a few of the things I learned:
    - Reduce waste!  More than recycling we need to stop using unnecessary things like disposable items (bags, utensils, containers, etc).   We can also reduce the amount of wasted food, specially here in the USA where food is taken for granted
    - Reuse waste!  There's technology already being used to reuse methane gases produced by food waste and animal waste into bioenergy!!  This blew my mind!!

I thought I was eco-friendly by avoiding plastic bags in all my shopping and recycling every item I could at home.  But this eco-challenge has showed me that there are much larger opportunities for us to reduce our carbon footprint.  I hope to continue in my learning and active pursue for a cleaner, brighter, better planet.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Globally, we produce roughly 310 million tons of plastic each year. Almost all of it is petro-plastic, made from fossil fuels. Experts, however, estimate that 90 percent of current plastics could be derived from plants instead. Bio-based plastics come from the earth, and those that are biodegradable can return to it—often with lower carbon emissions

    Adriana Ardila 4/21/2021 3:24 PM
I was not surprised by the carbon footprint we make on our traveling, but it definitively made me realize how much we are affecting the ecosystem by that.
  • Reflection Question
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

ASK  “Do you sell sustainable seafood?” Let businesses know it is important to you. BUY Best Choices first.  CHOOSE Good Alternatives or the eco-certified options if you can’t find a Best Choice.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Adriana Ardila 4/15/2021 10:07 AM
REDUCE! if we can all reduce the amount of waste we create every day we can make such a large impact on the environment.
  • Reflection Question
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
