Eduard Daryll 's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 120 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 10 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

Eduard Daryll Tan 4/14/2024 6:09 PMIt’s now easy to get samples or snippets of books in epub/pdf/kindle formats. I guess it’s like borrowing before you buy physical books (either secondhand from a thrift shop or new from a bookstore)

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Eduard Daryll Tan 4/12/2024 12:56 AMIt was hard to skip the garbage bin and have a separate staging area for sorting of wastes, particularly on perishables.
I learned that there are ways to extend usefulness of things we often discard. I think it’s important to be mindful of what we have onhand before we throw it out, and imagine what it may become instead if it was saved from that bin.-
Tracy Tuason-Obong 4/13/2024 6:19 PMIt's always been a challenge for me too. While I can't control my own actions most times, it is a challenge to implement low impact living mindset for an entire household.
Educating the younger generation of being mindful of the things they consume and buy pays off. Creatively explaining the value of their purchases and the lifecycle of these things is rewarding when I see them putting it in to practice. -
金良 马 4/12/2024 1:16 AMyes, it's really hard to do that. Do not waste food, water, take shuttle bus to company, turn off the light or computer when leaving.

- Sundry the mangosteen husk for fruit tea.
- Use bubble wrap to cover wooden table of sewing machine.
-
Eduard Daryll Tan 4/17/2024 6:54 PMAfter a while, we get sun dried chili flakes and powder.
-
Tracy Tuason-Obong 4/13/2024 6:20 PMGreat way to reuse these materials! I'm curious how you make fruit tea out of the mangosteen husk? -
Arjun Kumar 4/13/2024 12:44 PMNice!! one

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Eduard Daryll Tan 4/09/2024 4:41 AMIt feels great to cleanup some rags littered about the community backyard. Clean surroundings make for a relaxing outdoor experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Carry My TrashThis is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?
Eduard Daryll Tan 4/08/2024 4:52 PMIt takes conscious effort to avoid littering or discarding wastes in unsegregated bins.
Best to keep wastes that might be recycled at home. Be aware of packaging wastes sorting and disposal.-
Zhao Daryl 4/08/2024 5:24 PMthanks for sharing! it's a good idea to clean the mineral water bottle and reuse that as a oilcan, puncture some pin hole on the cap. that is very convenience to used.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Eduard Daryll Tan 4/07/2024 8:24 PMWithin a community park. I saw lots of reused water bottles turned into pots with thriving plants in them.-
Max Moncur 4/07/2024 8:24 PMI like that idea

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Eduard Daryll Tan 4/05/2024 1:53 PMThere are simply too many plastic containers and packaging that we use each day. Those that have logos: 3 PVC, 4 LDPE, 6 PolyStyrene, 7 mixed plastics, should be avoided as much as possible, because of the difficulty in home recycling effort.
If I find plastic film packaging in groceries, I will dispose of the plastic waste after sale, put the goods into reusable eco bags or carton boxes. Major supermarkets have better means of handling plastic wastes through their MRFs.

Eduard Daryll Tan 4/05/2024 1:41 PMEvery refill of my 1000mL canister is equivalent to 2 bottles of 500mL drinking water. I had 4 full cans in a day, so 8 pcs of plastic bottle wastes were avoided.
