Anne's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Action Track: Community Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Who did you engage in your lunch and learn? What resources did you use? How did it go and what did you learn?

Last week Olga and I hosted a lunch-and-learn to recap the Responsible Business USA conference that we attended. Lots of great examples of companies "doing the work"... a favorite one was the Chief Sustainability and Procurement Officer from Mars, who talked about the importance of incentivizing execs to achieve sustainability outcomes. Not a 5% bonus tied to sustainability KPIs, but a 25-30% bonus - large enough to motivate people to figure out challenging topics.

Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

My neighborhood association has a great formal and informal sharing economy. Neighbors post on the email list to offer or borrow big infrequently used items; last weekend we loaned our shop vac to a family down the block. My favorite borrowed item has been the neighborhood projector and inflatable screen... the neighborhood association owns these for occasional movie nights in the park, and residents can check them out for personal use. During the first Covid summer we did this to watch a virtual John Hiatt concert in the back yard with a few relatives!

Thinking about responsible souvenirs from trips... When I travel, I often bring back only memories and pictures. This helps me spend trips experiencing rather than shopping, and it reduces consumption and clutter when I get home.

Growing up my dad would always bring us kids souvenirs from his business trips. It was definitely thoughtful, and it shifted focus from "we're so glad you're back" to "what'd you bring me?" I don't remember any of the things he brought back any more but I do remember how happy I was to see him again. Here's a pic that I'll share with my kids: me in the concrete jungle of Times Square from my trip last week!
