Janet's actions

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

ATTEND THE EARTH MONTH WEBINAR ON BIODIVERSITY AND NATURE CONSERVATION

On Monday 1st April, I will attend the Earth Month: Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Webinar organized by the Emerson Manila Sustainability Team to learn why we should care about nature and biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 20 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

Waking up today I remember to do research how to make fermented plant or fruit fertilizer. A quick research has shown that I can mix fruits + brown sugar of equal measure, leave to ferment in a dry and cool place. It's usually molasses but I have some brown sugar as substitute. I have old avocados and banana slices, and some carrot peels I haven't thrown yet. With a thorough wash, I think I can add this to the mix. I hope I get this right. This will be my first home made organic fertilizer!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Low Carbon Diet
Which high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?

    Janet Serrano 4/11/2024 3:58 AM
I eat plenty of dairy products which unfortunately are considered high carbon foods. I have been drinking soy milk, so that's a start :) I'll continue to read some more. I recently discovered this website where we can check everything, from food to products and activities https://www.co2everything.com/
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests 30 for 30 in Nature
What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

    Janet Serrano's avatar
    Janet Serrano 4/11/2024 3:44 AM
For me, stepping outside for a few minutes gives me a break from my daily routine of sitting long hours and allows my eyes to rest for a few minutes. I always have back pains and walking around makes me more mobile and stretches back muscles. Aside from helping physical well-being, being outside helps us get connected. I am back to gardening so I try to I observe how our building gardeners tend to various plants. I was also able to get a free cuttings!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    Janet Serrano's avatar
    Janet Serrano 4/09/2024 5:15 AM
I buy from one small shop that sells all organic and recycled pots. They would send gardening notes everytime I order, sharing what ways we can help contribute to recycling, conservation and planting sustainably. It pays to help support efforts like this, while doing what we love best at home like gardening and growing vegetables.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Save the Bees

I planted sunflower seeds a week ago. Here’s a seedling that I transplanted using a recycled coffee cup. I hope all seeds germinate in time for the summer season here.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Choose Renewable Energy
If you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?

At home, we recently installed fence lights, fairy lights and outdoor camera - all solar powered. Happy to see these products that are commercially available with wide choices to choose from.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon Impact
What is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

    Janet Serrano's avatar
    Janet Serrano 4/08/2024 5:51 AM
I need to learn more. Unfortunately by reading I realized I don't have much knowledge that the food I consume have high carbon footprint. I do have a high vegetable diet so it's a step for me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

    Janet Serrano's avatar
    Janet Serrano 4/02/2024 8:21 PM
It helps to organize and manage the kitchen in general. There is a ready list to buy during grocery run, avoiding buying "wants." It also helps to prepare food and reduce time cooking when portioning veggies or meats according to meals to be cooked. I feel my fridge is smiling at me when the inside is neat and organized.

Things I learned from Earth Month Webinar 1) various activities of WWF and future projects with Emerson Manila 2) the collective effort of volunteers helping our farmers through Rural Rising PH. Thanks to our sustainability team for organizing this webinar. It's a great way to start the month of ecochallenge 2024 and more than that, bringing awareness how we can contribute and take an active part in our home and communities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

    Janet Serrano's avatar
    Janet Serrano 4/02/2024 12:17 AM
I read that cooking oil can be reused 2-3 times, just make sure to remove gunk from previous cooking.
