Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Sustainability Lunch and LearnWho did you engage in your lunch and learn? What resources did you use? How did it go and what did you learn?
Ida Russell 4/19/2024 10:35 AMI hosted a lunch and learn in partnership with my company's Sustainability AG. The speaker was Dr. Ingrid Waldron and the topic was Environmental Racism. It was a fascinating topic. Do Waldron is based in Canada and highlighted the issue from a Canadian perspective. I learned that there are steps you can take to promote healthy living conditions for all. -
Ida Russell 4/15/2024 7:04 AMI went camping this weekend with my daughter's scout troop. It was great to be in nature and take in our surroundings. This camporee had a zombie theme, and we were able to practice wilderness survival, first aid, shelter building, bridge building, fire starting, camp cleanliness, functional gadget creation and orienteering. The entire weekend we practiced leave no trace and were awarded best campsite. We also committed to using mess kits to keep down waste and pumped water from the on-site well to reduce water bottle usage.-
Kathleen Schlicht 4/17/2024 11:13 AMHow cool is this! Great work everyone :) -
Caitlin Heber 4/15/2024 7:07 AMThis is by far my favorite post so far on this feed and had to jump in and share; looks like it was a blast!

Ida Russell 4/09/2024 5:58 PMI was unable to spend time in nature due to rainy weather. It was nice to sit near a window and watch the rain fall. -
Ida Russell 4/08/2024 12:16 PMToday was an awesome opportunity to spend time in nature and view the solar eclipse. I was able to share this special event with my daughter and husband. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Ida Russell 4/06/2024 8:34 PMBeing in nature has been great. A lot of times we spend too much time indoors and under fake light. It has been great to visit many of the local parks in my city and connect with the earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Ida Russell 4/01/2024 8:20 AMI have purchased a Cirkul bottle and I use a thermal bottle. These 2 bottles are allowing me to avoid using plastic water bottles. The thermal bottle is also helping me to keep my drinks cold for the entire day. I do not have to repeatedly open and close the freezer, reducing electricity use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Ida Russell 4/01/2024 8:14 AMMy family has planned for all meals today. We will reduce waste and water by reusing plates where we can (sandwich sitting on plate does not need to be re-washed). This is giving me a better handle on my budget and the control to not eat out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Ida Russell 4/01/2024 5:56 AMI have put a budget in place that will limit spending. My family is committed to only getting what we NEED and not just what we WANT. This in not only good for the environment, but also good for me. -
Ida Russell 4/01/2024 5:18 AMSuper excited to start this challenge. Taking time to look out for our planet is key to its survival. Happy that my company participates in this every year. Good luck to everyone and lets try to make an impact this month.
