Jana's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 15 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 1 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Pick Up the Phone
I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 1 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Use Public Transit
Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 2 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 10 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Forest-Friendly FoodsWhat did you learn about forest-friendly foods? How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Jana Kovalcikova 4/16/2024 9:19 PMI will try to Avoid buying beef, uncertified palm oil, or other products that come from the tropics. For beef, for example, forests in the tropics are being cleared on a large scale, and cows contribute significantly to climate change by emitting methane. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Jana Kovalcikova 4/16/2024 9:12 PMFor example, the global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected transportation around the world. Restrictions on public transport have caused a huge drop in passenger numbers. Public transport was seen as a generator of risk of contagion, leading to an expected decline in its use.Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I tried to contribute to protecting the environment by using public transport more and encouraging cycling and walking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jana Kovalcikova 4/14/2024 11:58 AMLitter picking is a great way to give back to the local community. By keeping our environment clean and healthy, we can create a more pleasant and safe place to live. Litter picking can also bring people together, as we work towards a common goal. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Carry My TrashThis is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?
Jana Kovalcikova 4/11/2024 4:30 AMMicroplastics Everywhere: Plastic waste doesn’t simply disappear; it breaks down into smaller particles called microplastics. These tiny bits are found globally, even in remote areas, and are increasingly detected in our food and water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal ProductsWhat new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?
Jana Kovalcikova 4/11/2024 4:18 AMi try to use gluten-free, and vegan cosmetics for skincare, in refillable containers.Refillable skincare containers significantly reduce waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Jana Kovalcikova 4/07/2024 9:09 PMI’ve observed that consistent tossing or turning of the compost pile is crucial. Regular mixing helps aerate the compost.
Once my compost is ready, I plan to use it for Garden Soil Enrichment: Mixing the compost into garden beds or raised planters will enhance soil structure, improve nutrient content, and promote healthier plant growth.-
Raul Poias 4/09/2024 4:27 AMThat sounds amazing Jana! I am planning on creating a compost area of my own once I get my own place. Thanks for the inspiration.
